Interested in Larsen’s splits compared to Deboom and Reid.
Frank just click on the name and the splits will come up!
I was told Peter had some bike problems, so not sure what his bike split will look like compared to the others.

thanks. Is there a separate link to Reid and Deboom? They are not on the same page as Steve (or I don’t see them)
Any one race is not a good predictor of another but only gives an indication of the potential if the result is good. A bad result can come from many things. Sort of wondering how much Steve lost on the swim and how he made it back up. Both his bike (26.5mph) and run (6:25 miles) were pretty good. Further, I am not sure what it means as neither Tim or Steve were being pushed in their respective races (and if Peter had mechanical issues that means little for Kona also, as does the fact this was in July) but it would have been interesting if they were in the same race. We would have more likely seen a sub-4 hour win in that instance.

Tim and Peter had open roads. Steve had an hour and a half of people of all sorts of abilities and speeds to wind his way through.

So, are you saying Steve had a drafting advantage with all those people ahead of him which would account for that fast bike split?

Nope. I’m saying he probably had to slow down some to get around people on those small roads.
I would assume it would have been tough to draft since he was going so fast.

He didn’t exactly come from behind. His swim split was pretty decent. It would take him minutes to get to the front on the bike.
He started 90 minutes after the first wave. There were hundreds of AGers on the course before he swam one stroke in the river.

Vineman has wave starts. Don’t think Steve was anywhere close to being in the first wave so there were tons of people to weave through on the swim, bike, and run. It will be interesting in Kona again this year and this time it will be an age grouper putting the screws to the pros.
Won’t he be too far back to put the screws into them, as the different waves he will be AG now…??

No waves in Kona, unless they are changing the rules. He will be 10 minutes down on the bike as per usual and 10 minutes up on everyone except perhaps a German or 2 at T2 as per usual.

Great point Frank. Back in '99 or so an age grouper won Vineman when a bunch of pros raced (in the first wave). It was Matt Seeley. Matt got the cash. At least one pro complained that he had the advantage to draft his way to the front. Ridiculous complaint? Maybe, maybe not. Larsen did the same thing at Pacific crest in June. I started in the elite wave and he started a couple of waves back, 6 minutes to be precise. After he passed me, I watched him work his way toward the front. He was clearly riding up behind everyone in front of him. This is exactly what Frank jokes about and what that unnamed pro back in '99 was complaining about. He was definitely getting an advantage as he passed each earlier starter, it’s a fact. There is no way anyone can quantify the advantage, but there is a distinct one.
Why do some may folks have to try and make a negative out of a person who is better than them? What would you do if you were in his shoes? There is nothing that says you would not do exactly what you accuse him of doing. I know I would since one uses what ever cards legally one is dealt!! Just like in car racing.
I wish him nothing but the best! I wish I had his parents! Well, maybe Lance’s would be better.
Does this forum always attack anyone who does well and try to accuse them of cheating?

The forum itself doesn’t but some here do, or so it seems.
are you directing this question at me? I’m not accusing anyone of anything, I am simply attempting to show how starting at the back can be seen as an advantage or a disadvantage, depending on your view of the situation. Another aside, however, is that I heard Larsen was a bit bummed he didn’t know about the elite start at Pac Crest and thought he was at a disadvantage to Matt Lieto. Matt probably needs the money more, I’m glad he won.
What’s up with all the exclamation points?
Yes, a glass of water can be half full, or half empty depending on how one looks at it. I sure like trying to spend the remaining years of my life looking at the glass half full.
Dave
I have to be honest, I don’t understand anything you wrote.
