Does anyone have a life? or is it all Tri all the time

Does anyone have a life, or is it all tri all the time. I have to say after enjoying some frothy bev’s and watching bball, I have to wonder…

Frothy Bev? You mean when your recovery drink gets all shuck-up?

Personally… I find tourney games more thrilling while pedaling on rollers. How about that 6 OT game from the Orange… and that guy who played 67 of 70 minutes said his legs were numb… what about mine? wink =)

Seriously though…

Triathlons are great.

Wait… what were we talkin about?

I am obsessed…with finding balance in my life and banking time with my family.

I am also thoroughly wrapped up in the sport of triathlon. After 3 years as a hobby, I got a few certs, including FIST, moved to a new city to take a full time job as a tri/cycling coach so I can have even more time to pursue my goal(s) of becomming one of the fastest amateurs or one of the slowest (and oldest) pros in the country. I don’t watch sports on tv other than triathlon, running, cycling and swimming. I have no off season. I ride aluminum and I never lift weights

I guess it depends how good you are - or want to be?

I just race the local scene, so no, it’s not tri all the time. I work, I ride motorcycles (race them occasionally), spend time with my wife and daughter. Fortunately I get to work from home often so I can do some of this during the day…

Every sunday now (finally!) I watch World Superbike, AMA Supercross and soon AMA sportbike racing with my old man…

Life. With a job, wife, kids, you have to have balance in your life or you lose one or all of them.

I grew up playing soccer during my younger years. I own and semi regularly rock climb. I fish. I have a canoe. I own 3 pairs of skis. I rollerblade during the fall to cross train for skiing. I own snowshoes. I own a surfboard. Watching me dribble-drive with my left hand is like watching a disaster. There’s an Irish hurling club team in the area that I’d like to join, but tri training is limiting my involvement with that. I own a 4season tent, a 0F bag, a 35F bag, Primus stove, and the requisite backpack. I am part of the Mug Club at Iron Hill Brewery. I can shoot in the low 90’s. I don’t throw the best spiral, but I’ve got a decent array of frisbee throws. Diving kinda scares me and have no interest at this time. I will adventure race at some point, and I should be banned to eternal damnation for not having a mountain bike still. :frowning: I am fully committed to training and I really enjoy triathlon, but I think that “tri all the time” just doesn’t compute.

Are you wondering if you do too much tris or too much beer drinking and watching basketball? If you do what you enjoy you don’t have to feel guilty.

I hope to hike the Appalachian Trail . I am an avid backpacker, its a great escape from tri’s

I tri **none **of the time.
And still no “life” apart from family and work.

Apart from training and racing, I’m sort of a couch potato. No TV, though. I read a lot.

Are we related? I grew up playing soccer. Own three pairs of ski’s, and do most of the other stuff you just listed off. Going rock climbing today in 15-20 min as soon as I shake this hangover. I’m also originally from NJ, as your name seems to imply.

This amuses me, as none of the people I’m actually related to share any of these interests (apart from the occasional hike).

Balance, like others have said, is a constant battle.
I am up at dawn, surfing at first light for about an hour.
Come home and watch our two little kids (1 and 5) while my wife goes for a run.
Train for 1-2 hours, then head into work from about 11-5:30. We own our own ecommerce business, so work hours are flexible.
Weekends, I train only Saturday morning til noon and take Sundays off with the family (still sneak in a surf if the waves are good though).
Evenings from 8-10, my wife and I camp on the couch and watch our favorite TV shows.

I read a lot too.

Every time I start to try and “have a life” and date, I just get annoyed. Boys just get in the way.

I like being wrapped up in my own little swim bike run (school) existence.

Go to the Lavandar room, not much tri going on there. You can bash your lest favorite president, talk other sports, or get the latest movie review… ANd just about everything inbetween…

Hell,
This question is so awesome that it should earn a bold titled ‘sticky’ at the head of the page, as a must answer before proceeding…

For me, despite 3-10 events per FY, and a love and ability to improve on 15-30 hours per week of training…My outside life is just that:

A life outside…And a full one at that, with my friends, family and loved one(woman of great substance)

Are you kidding? For 98+% of the people on this board, triathlon is a hobby, albeit one that takes a lot of time. Of course we have lives.

I work 50-60 hours a week in a very stressful job; work as hard as I can to be a good father to my two sons (ages 7 & 4) and a good husband; run a second business in my spare time; read at least one novel a week; and do the best I can at whatever else life brings me.

During the week between 5:30 and 7 a.m. I train for my hobby and on the weekends I do long runs, rides and a Masters swim practice (adds up to 10-12 hours a week). I’ll never be great at triathlon, but I wouldn’t be anyway even if I trained 30+ hours a week because I have very average genetics (and suck at swimming! ). Of course, we have lives–for almost everyone on this board this is a hobby and a commitment to lead a healthy, balanced, athletic life.

Now all that being said, I did notice that on my wife’s Face Book page she called herself a “triathlon widow” but I think she was just being dramatic.

Funny. When I am just running, if I put in 12 - 13 hours a week, I have a TON of mileage. I definitely have enough training. I can get in over 100 miles a week with that time and still go out 2-3 nights a week

When I am training for triathlon - ANY distance, 12 hours a week feels like barely scratching the surface.

Ever tried just the Long Trail in Vermont? The southern half of it actually IS the Appalachian trail. The northern half is rugged as hell. But it’s a great hike. About 273 miles. Perfect for a fall hike
