Does anybody know, What was the last race(s) that Scott Molina, Dave Scott and Mark Allen competed In?

Even if it was just a “for fun” thing for these fellows, do any of you guys know the last time any of these “Big Three” of the “Big Four” raced?

Not sure with Allen but Molina , Scott, and Tinley did a sprint race in 2005 at Fort Desota in Florida. If my old memory is correct. Scott won the race outright at age 51, Molina was fourth and Tinley was top ten not sure if he was 7th or 8th. It had to be at least in 2000 or early because while the rest of the big four dabble with the sport at some level, Mark Allen has remained absent from competition to my knowledge.

I rode with Molina and Stadler a number of years ago at Laguna Phuket and Molina did that race. That may have been '03 or '04.

Thanks for the info. I didn’t realize Tinley had raced so recently. Thank you especially for that.

Molina did IMNZ 05 in 9.29
.

Tom,

Scott Molina competed in Kona this year on the 20th anniversary of his 1988 win. I know he had race plans to go hard but was he was hampered by injury. He had to revise his race plan/goal. If he could have kept his run legs together the AGers would have been in trouble.

Molina probably raced this weekend in NZ. I just talked to him, and he finished an Epic camp, and said he was able to run 8 days in a row, a recent record for him. Since it is still summer there, I would suspect that he races a couple times a month in some fashion…

I know Dave did the 1/2 up in Northern CA last year I think it was. Him and Paul Thomas came in together around 4:31 or so. I’m sure Dave has raced since then, but I don’t know where.

Tinley was entered in some races last year, I know his name showed up on the roster for the Arrowhead race next to us, just don’t know if he pitched up or not.

Mark retired fully when he quit, but surfs almost every day, and does some running to stay fit…

Pigg still races too, doing just about everything from cross country, to bike racing, to some tris I think. OF all of them, I would say that Molina does the most racing still, and I would count his epic camps as the worst kind of race… Something like 5 to 8 hours a day, everyday for over a week. As tough as any stage race you could set up, wish I was able to join them, sound fun as hell…

In 2000 the Big Four(Mark Allen, Dave Scott, Scott Molina, and Scott Tinely) were invited to compete at Buffalo Springs Lake Half Ironman(now 70.3). While we were successful in having Scott, Molina and Tinley, Mr. Allen did not return our calls. I have mentioned that to him a couple of times since, in casual conversation, and he just grins. When he retired he really retired. At any rate we had a great weekend having these three giants of the sport compete at our race. For the record, Dave Scott went 4:25, while Scott Molina went 4:41 and Mr. Tinley(it was his fifth visit to our race) went 4:48. That year the winner of the race, also now a legend, was Jimmy Riccitello with a 4:13, and four time winner James Bonney was second. At the awards dinner Mr. Molina was ask to make a few remarks and he prefaced his remarks with the statement heard round the Loop of Lubbock, “This was one f…g hard race!!” We appreciated these guys coming to our race and will always remember them being here. They are always invited to return to the Llano Estacado canyons for a truly old course racing venue.

That was in 03.

I think Scott did the London tri last summer, but he may have been part of a relay team.

I believe Allen’s last race was in Honolulu at a Triathlon Grand Prix event. These were put on by the Bray brothers out of Australia and I had the pleasure of calling it. I remember it was around 1996 or 97 and at the awards ceremony he had me tell the crowd it was his last competitive event. I don’t remember if he did another one after that, only he would know.

Has it really been that long? That was my second triathlon and it was coming off of a previous super sprint tri I had competed in 2 years earlier. What an eye opener, but what a way to really get hooked on the sport. If I had known then what it meant to see these guys racing together, I would have ran with a camera to try and catch their picture as they were coming in on the run and I was going out. That year was also one of the “hot years” with the temps getting into the 90’s.

Mark,

Many older guys who were good at one time still do something, but they may not race. They stay fit and they gear up for crazy or “epic” training or adventure days.

It’s kinda what I do. I have no huge interest in toeing the line at real races. I have done it from time to time over the years, but it’s kinda a been-there-done-that feeling.

For me my one key goal is to be fit enough on the bike, to make the front break or group on most of the big local group rides. That’s it. If I can do that and hang in for a 100K at a decent pace - that feels like I have accomplished something.

I love that guy. He is really a great athlete and a fine character. The training ride I did with him (Scott Molina) and Stadler years ago in Phuket, Thailand was a true high point in my my experience in the sport.

Yes, I am afraid it was that long ago. When I first started going back in the archives to find the results
I was thinking 2005, then 2003, finally finding it in 2000. Time does fly when your having fun, and this year Buffalo Springs will be 20 years old, and I am 70. It really does seem like the first BSLT with 91 entries was just a few years ago. What makes me mad at myself is that we have had some really great triathletes do our race over the years and I have not made a photo album of them. While I do have some bits and pieces I just seemed to be too busy before, during, and after the event to have photos made with all the greats. Oh well, I do have the memories and the good news is that there are many more future years to look forward to.

I think it was the New York tri that Dave did two or three years ago. I remember seeing a hilarious video of him being interviewed before and during the start. The gun went off in the middle of the interview and he had to quickly turn and dive. I just checked YouTube but couldn’t find it.
