Do you lie when you post and why?

I mean do you write things on this forum like:

  • I train 20 hours per week (When you really train ~ 10).
  • My avg speed on the bike is 24 mph (When you really do ~ 17 mph).
  • I run 5:30 min/mile (When you really run ~ 7-8 min/mile).
  • I’ve done 8 ironmans so far.
  • I put 8000 miles a year (bike and run combined).

Please add to the list. Confess your lies… and why…

I suck at triathlon…oh wait that’s true.

~Matt

No… I’m honest… Matter of fact I probably underestimate or promote… I consider myself a MOP’r, but at the same time… I’m shooting for a sub 5:00 at Timberman this weekend… Not really sure those two things go together…

Then you ARE a liar…just in reverse. Don’t they call this a sandbagger?

~Matt

It’s stupid to lie about how fast you are unless you never race.

If you race and other posters here know your name they can find out if you’re living up to the smack you’re talking.

So either: (1) never ever race. (2) don’t lie about how fast you are or (3) don’t use your real name.

I"m not that fast and I can prove it.

I think lies intimidate new athletes. Initially I was intimidated mainly because people will brag about their performances, their aero bars the disc wheels… blah… blah…blah

After my first race I realised that only 10-15 percent of the people really have something to brag about. The rest of the people (myself included) struggle to do a decent race or in a lot of cases struggle to finish.

But people use nick names a lot of times ergo we can type anything from the comfort and privacy of our computers and who knows who we are.

i.e. I could claim I’m Steve Larsen and start replying to people’s posts.

If I’m not an ST liar I’ll tell the truth and my answer is “no”.

If am an ST liar I’ll lie and my answer will be “no”.

So, regardless of whether I lie or not, I’ll say “no”.

Here is a good lie:

I’m from NYC and I do my swim training exclusively on the Hudson. I believe it is pretty safe… And I don’t care about water testing.

Yesterday’s Dilbert reminded me a lot of the ST environment. Mainly the first 2 frames -

I actually see the exact opposite in ST.

Guys who run 5:30’s saying “I’m not a good runner”

or “I don’t train much if at all” – when they do 22 hours a week.

“I only swim a little” – when it’s 30,000 meters a week.

I think it would be more accurate to say that many people are ST exaggerators, aka “ish” people. For example:

Your PR for a 5K is 18:50 but you say “I usually run a 5 K in around 18.”

Or they do 22 mph for 20 minutes with a tailwind and then say “I rode 2 hours at an avs of 22 mph.”

The thing about this site is you can brag all you want about how big your Johnson is trying to impress people but you just end up looking foolish when some diminutive French guy you are replying to sighs and reluctantly whips his out and makes you look like a squirrel.

Personally, I love the posts of:
I rode 35 days last month for a total of 3000 miles.

and then the replies of:
“Wow, that is not a bad week…oh, wait, it took you a whole month? You must have been sick.”

" Yesterday’s Dilbert reminded me a lot of the ST environment. Mainly the first 2 frames -"

That’s True. Took me a while to find the Dilbert comic on that page.

No, I’m not fast enough to lie.

This year, my averages are:

Running: 9:27/mile

Cycling: 3:23/mile

Swimming: 32:17/mile

Race pace is very different from training pace. Having that person to ‘catch’ makes all the difference for me.

At the end of July I posted that I had put in just under 87 hours on the bike for that month. The reality of it is that I put in just over 99 hours. I hadn’t realized at the time that I wasn’t including time at 0 watts in my cyclingpeaks software, so I accidentally dropped 12 hours. Sue me, I’m a frickin liar.

I can’t get away with it, too many people on here know me.

Aloha,

.

I think the dirty secrets thread covered this.

Most of the very vocal critics of training times in finish times seemed to be most full of S?*T.

I also remember there being a theme of cheaters and people with Mdot tatoos who had not done so much as a oly.

I know that I am slow but I finished…

I actually see the exact opposite in ST.

I guess we need to open a new thread about humble slowtwitchers.

I know a guy, and he’s a REALLY nice guy, that has the 5 olympic rings tat’d on his bod. I doubt he’s ever told anyone he was in the Olympics, but for the life of me I can’t figure out why he got that done. Regardless, he’s such a nice guy it’d be hard to believe he ever lies about it, but still…

I’ve got an M-dot on my calf. Far as I can see, all that makes me is an idiot.

Am I an ST-Liar - no, not in any way I can think of. Well maybe. I said I’ve had about a dozen flats this season, it might be a few less. I’m SORRY, OK?
