So I just purchased a used bike on Slowtwitch. It seems that the cassette needs to be changed. I’m getting chain skipping and can see wear on the cassette. I’ll be replacing it with the same type (Ultegra 10 speed 12-25). Do you recommend putting on a new chain at the same time?
Replace the chain with the cassette the first time around and then keep an eye on the chain. If you replace the chain before it starts to wear the cassette oddly then you only have to replace the chain, much cheaper than a cassette chain combo.
ditto what others have said. for the used bike get a new chain and cassette. moving forward check your chain often (get a park tool chain checker, they’re cheap) and at the first sign of stretch, replace. if you’re diligent with this your cassettes will last much longer.
The only time I’ve had chain skipping it was from a bad chain. Chains are cheap. Replace it before you ride it. Never know how long it’s been on and a chain failure can be pretty catastrophic (I’m paranoid about chains…)
and invest in a Tool to Clean your chain (get a good one that really clean, not a cheap one):
it will make your chain last MUCH longer !!
(I have > 6000 miles on mine (ultegra) and it’s still ok, well I will change it this spring anyway)
