Well… he came in 11th OA ( 4:30 ) at Tupper Lake today.
Less than a minute behind ST’s own Kus who’s Kona bound , as well as some really fast doodes ! So kudos to him for showing up and racing with a big target on his back. Thats not a fun way to race.
He kinda went thru the gauntlet here a few months ago.
since he cut the bike AND the run in harriman, are we supposed to believe his splits here? let’s hear from some of the people who did the race.
I believe his splits at Tupper. Although no timing mats, if you cut the bike people would notice. The run, with the out and backs and no mats one could certainly do it if they wanted, but I don’t believe that it would go unnoticed. I also don’t believe anyone ever implied he was a cheater (intentionally cut Harriman), so with a clearly marked course there would be no reason to think he would miss any of it.
I will say, his relatively good result actually confirms he must have cut the Harriman course. Murphy’s Law, tetsuoni, kus and tyler durden have all raced both course in the past 2 years and raced yesterday at Tupper. They all rode slower at Harriman by 25-30 minutes (or more), but somehow for this guy it is only like 2 minutes different?
Other possibilities:
The conditions at Tupper yesterday were almost perfect. I heard Harriman weather was dreadful. Maybe somehow this guy can only perform at his best in hypothermic conditions and pouring rain. Mild, partly cloudy low humidity conditions make him slow.
Harriman was 5-6 weeks ago. Maybe his coach is a total moron and screwed up his fitness really bad so he is nowhere near where he was at Harriman.
In truth though, 4:30 at Tupper is an excellent time, especially for a newbie. I don’t think anyone doubts his Tupper performance. This kid probably has a bright future and the fact that one or two posters vehemently contend that he did not cut some of the Harriman course despite overwhelming evidence to the contrary (nobody ever said he did it intentionally) should not be held against him.
I agree, his 2nd HIM, in a competitive field of studs looking to get paid, and he came in 10th oa w/ 4:30, is a very very good performance.
We were all anxiously awaiting him picking up his AG hardware, but when they called out his name, he wasn’t anywhere to be found. So, we figgered he and his coach musta gone to the mall or something
All joking aside, I know many of us would have liked to meet him.
The kid’s got a bright future, and for so early in his tri career this is an excellent result.
He has a pretty balanced SBR skill set, he was solid on all 3.
However - The Next Lance or the greatest bike prodigy since Tyler Hamilton, he’s not.
Too bad, that’d been kinda cool.
