Nearly every time I stand up, I get really dizzy and have to either sit back down or lean on the wall or something. Does this happen to anyone else? Is this something I should be worried about or just accept?
oops…just found the answer

I am no expert. Have the same issues. From what I understand it had to do with me being tall, thin and a bit low rest hr. When I stand up it takes a short moment for the blood to reach the head. No biggie.
Doc said. Have you ever fainted. No. Then dont worry to much about it.
But this is me. I cant tell if it is the same thing for you.
I get that too-thought it was something old people get-like the blood vessels aren’t working correctly-but I like it is probably low BP and low pulse. we do all this exercise to be health and now we can’t even stand out right-funny!
Mike - it’s your own damn fault for being so fit. This is what happens when you train to run impossible distances through the arctic tundra. Sure this helps your tri results, but running 3:08 at IM Wisco doesn’t come for free you know…
You doing EpicMan again next year?
I get this too, but I’ve never been accused of being fit.

I get this too, and actually passed out a couple of times. Went to the doctor and had a bunch of expensive tests performed. It all showed I had low BP and low resting HR. When standing it takes an extra second or so for the blood to reach the brain. I was told to come to a standing position more slowly. Took a bit of adjustment, but now I do rise more slowly and no longer have the problem.

It helps if you don’t twirl around rapidly several times as you stand.
I get it all the time, unless I’ve slacked off on the training. That’s how I know I’m doing enough.
Hello Schermy,
Same thing happens when you pull 4 or more G’s in an airplane. Inadequate oxygen to brain.
They make G-suits for that - a rubber air pressure bladder around your gut and legs that pumps up at the start of the G onset to prevent blood pooling in lower extremities.
You can mimic the G-suit by contracting your gut muscles before you stand up and usually prevent the dizzyness.
Also as an aside you can use the same gut grunt to stay concious in a low pressure atmosphere - in an aircraft or on a mountain. ‘Grunt breathing’
My grand niece’s husband from Australia died suddenly recently of a heart attack. He had mentioned that he would feel dizzy on getting up from a sitting position. He was in mid twentys, athletic (mountain biking and running), but autopsy revealed a very enlarged heart he was unaware of. When you have your yearly physical is a good time to do a bit more detailed testing. My experience (no doctor here) is that it is not unusual to have this momentary dizzyness on going from sitting to standing in very fit humans.
Cheers,
Neal
Thanks for the responses everyone…and you bet I’ll be at Epicman…always a good time…
Seems to be as others have said low HR and probably low BP…fitter I am the more often happens when I stand up from sitting or lying down,…
While resting heart rate and low BP might be the reason, based on the the fact that you experience frequent repeats of the condition, I would suggest that you run a google search for congenital heart conditions such as Wolf-Parkinson-White syndrome.
