Do you eat the yolk?

Left home without the normal prepared lunch and snacks today. I was running late for Masters practice so I stopped at the local supermarket afterward. I loaded up the basket and among others things I through in a dozed boiled eggs (shelled). Cool!

Now, I seem to recall egg whites are good and the yolks are Bad! I think? But why? Eggs are not processed no hydrogenated freaking oils. I need little education here.

Thanks in advance

Paul

Thanks for the correction! yoke or yolk… It all about the yellow stuff in the middle.

A yoke is something that goes on a pair of oxen. A yolk is in an egg.

The yolk has all the flavour. Eat it.

You can buy boiled eggs in the supermarket? Weird.

I believe that the yoke has all of the cholesterol while the white is considered the ideal protein because it contains all of the amino acids blah blah blah. When I do eggs, I do one yolk per 4 eggs.

It’s not a good or bad, it’s just a matter of what you want in your diet. The whites are all protein, while the yolk contains fat, cholesterol, and everything else that is in an egg. You need some of that in your diet, but how much depends on a bunch of factors.

There was more discussion on this about a month ago. Check it out: http://forum.slowtwitch.com/gforum.cgi?post=102049;search_string=egg%20whites;#102049

I thought that the yolk had the good cholesterol, not the bad stuff. I could be wrong though

Never in my life have I eaten a yoke - however I do eat a lot of egg yolks  Kidding aside, I tend to eat the whole egg (sans shell, of course - and don’t give me any of that calcuim BS!) The only exception is if I’m making an omlette, and then I’ll use say 4 whole eggs (with yolks) and 3 more egg whites.

I don’t much like the yolk.

Yolk contans all the sulfur containing proteins, good stuff for your cartliage and joints. Old nutrition theory was yolks were bad for you because of the cholesterol. Yet, nutritionists never seemed to put the fact that 25% of the non-protein content of the cellular membranes in your body is comprised of cholesterol in perspective with cholesterol intake. If you are an active, fit individual I don’t see a problem. And no, I am not a nutritionist and I don’t want to play one on TV.

I eat the white, the yolk, and when I am done with that I eat the chicken too.

Have you ever tried to eat the ckicken who spent her entire life laying eggs? Tough as leather, stew pot material only.

I eat lots of eggs, fresh from my chickens in the back yard. Totally organic and FULL of flavor. I will often reduce the yolks to a 2:1 ratio and give the extra to my dogs, it makes their coats silky smooth and they love em as much as I do. If I could only get them to stop stealing them from the nests when I go out to collect them in the afternoon! Life is too short for me to worry about counting carbs, fat and all that mumbo jumbo. I just try to eat a low on the food chain as I can reasonably do and when I do buy processed foods I look for the shortest ingredient lists available, usually indicating less processing.

that amount of cholesterol is not a big problem, it’s the saturated fats that are consumed with them that are the bigger problem. 90% of our cholesterol is made de novo from saturated fats.

TriMaster-P,

Docfuel is right when he writes that the major part of cholesterol is endogenous, not supplied by food stricto sensu. Egg’s cholesterol can be considered as a good one, and cholesterol is very important since it is involved in many points of our metabolism, cell membrans, bile salts etc… and our blood level is more related to the type of fat we eat than to food cholesterol …

For egg yolk, it contains liposoluble vitamins, carotenoïds and different other nutrients that have a proven nutritional benefit, even if you can find them in other foods such as vegetables, fruits …

You can eat it, no problem !

Thanks All. I will continue to include whole eggs in my diet and will harbor no ill will toward the yolk!

Eggs. Yuck. Too gross for words. I never eat them. I do have one egg story though:

I was dating a wonderful young lady formerly referred to on this forum as the French Canadian Princess. And a Princess she was. Brilliant engineer, fine athlete, gorgeous young lady with an alluring command of the French vernacular and an accent so lilting it would melt steel. Fine young lady, far better than I ever deserved.

After dating for a while it is time to meet the parents. They live in a delightful house in rural Ontario. We go there for Sunday Breakfast.

Now, I have been in the military, been to many third world countries, been to survival schools. I’ve eaten bugs, grubs, plants and scavenged food from unspeakable places. I once went three days with no food. And, I have learned that the key to winning hearts and minds of an indigenous culture is to embrace their food and culture. So at The Princess’s house I am determined to make a good impression.

However. Eggs absolutely gross me out. I would sooner consider eating a cat turd. They are nasty. They turn my stomach. They stink. They come from a chicken’s ass. I despise them.

Guess what’s for breakfast? Yup. Barf-jerking eggs.

I’ll be God-damned if I didn’t look across the table at those beautiful eyes and choke those vile things down with a smile on my face. It was a horror. I thought once they passed my tongue I might be OK. Wrong. My stomach refused them. It willed me to vomit. I maintained command of my rioting digestive tract and quelled the coup it was attempting. I somehow keep them down. Those vile eggs violated the entire length of my digestive tract, all 65 polluted feet of it.

Had the Princess’s parents put a bowl of gravel in front of me I would have eaten it with greater relish.

It was a horrific trial. But I prevailed.

It was for naught though. We parted company and she easily found the favor of a better man than I, whom she makes a home with here in Dearborn- both good friends of mine.

So, I take it you don’t like eggs Tom?

You would be correct Sir.

Man Tom! One of my favorite things is having a breakfast of an Omlette and Mimosas with my girlfriend. Three things you hate, eggs, booze, and women. Go figure. :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

I recently recovered from the women aversion thanks to a delightful young lady.

Oh sh#t, here we go again!
