Do you count core work?

For those who regularly do core work:

Do you count it with your daily workout hours? I have been doing about 1 hour of core work (including pushups) every morning before breakfast for a long long time. I never even think about it when I consider daily/weekly training volume, because I have been doing it for so long. So I have two questions:

  1. Should I count an extra 7 hours in my weekly volume?

  2. Is this too much core work? That is, should we “periodize” the core work as we do the aerobic training? Should I cut out a few days per week, especially when the training gets long? I was already thinking that I would not do it on my long IM training days coming this summer.

Thoughts?

Sheesh!! Just when I start to feel proud about doing a measley 10-15 minutes of core after every weight training session - 7 hours a week!

That counts in my book - and would certainly count in my log!!

I would be reluctant to call it 7 hrs worth of work b/c there’s some static time included. Personally, I just put it down in the log and if i have to count it towards “hours” I 1/2 the time…

Good point about the static time. I’m not really looking to pad my training log, I’m just wondering if people even consider it when thinking about tri training, or just do it in addition to everything else because they know it is important.

imho, i think those 7hrs might be better spent swimming, biking or running. core work is important but not at the expense of the main workouts. pushups may give you some nice muscles but swim chords might be a bigger bang for your buck. again, just my 2cents.

My sentiments exactly. I would use maybe two or three (max) mornings for core work. The other morning I’d be on the road or in the pool. My core is stretched and flexed to the max when I’m in the pool. I’m really venting today. You all are prob hating me today. Tough shit.

Depends what you use the training log for. I include all training, also crosstraining, skiing …

This is not inflate numbers (only I will see anyway), but when analyzing why I felt flat after an hour of recoveryswimming, it might be useful to know that I did an 8 hour hike the day before

If your traininglog is only relevant for analyzing and changing your training include it. And try to sleep longer 2*/week keep 2 core sessions and take an easy jog 3* … more bang

What are you talking about H20? I love it when you rant! Good point about hitting the road/bike. Of course, I have never let the core work get in the way of the SBR workouts, it all just takes longer. You think 3 times per week will give max benefits?

Wear a heart rate monitor, record the time spent in the aerobic (40% MAx+) zones. Curling dumbells does nothing for my sport’s endurance fitness, but crunches, jumping rope & plyometrics, and other core activities that elevate my HR do.

Have you ever worn a monitor?
