Do you change yout tire combo or pressure for recent chip seal?R

Race I am doing Saturday just sent an e-mail that most of the course for the half iron has just been chip sealed. Running Vittorioa open corsa evo sl on HED3’s. Never planned to race on fresh chip seal. What tire pressure change would one recommend. Thanks

I’d drop pressure a bit maybe 5-10psi maybe more, depends on how big the gravel is they used. The real danger is the gravel patches that tend to form as it gets knocked loose from the recent chipseal, be careful of that.

Thanks. That was what I was thinking. Trying out new tires and am using latex tubes for the first time… Before this e-mail the roads were supposed to be really smooth. I ride chip seal all the time but not 56 of new. Its a 14 mile 4 loop course. …

hmmmm… if it were me i’d change the tires. 4 loops of the same fresh gravel will beat up those expensive CX’s pretty bad and may bring your risk for flat up a little (or a lot). If it were a small section, then I would stay with your current setup. Conti Gatorskins or Specialized Armadillos maybe? I would still use the latex tubes.

I have the same setup as you (Vittoria CX’s/Latex tubes).

My 0.02 cents.

Good luck on your race. I’ll be doing my first half on Sunday (Toughman)

Have some used Pro Race 3’s. Cannot afford other tires…Thanks though. These are the first Vittoria’s I have had. Brand new. Not used to the wear issues yet

Good luckon you race…This my return after illness.Swim and bike is back, the run…well that will suck
.

if you use your regular pressures, I think you will find that with latex tubes that chip seal feels like buttah
.

So you do not think new chip seal will tear up the Vittoria’s? …Thanks…I was surprised on that tire tube combo, on how much it felt better than reg tube and Pro 3’s on HED3"s.

I agree with jackmott on the ride.

Your new Vittorias should hold up fine on chip. If you have the opportunity, an easy loop will help you with most of your concerns.

My biggest concern on chip seal is the loose rock that hasn’t adhered or been swept off yet. Hopefully your RD is working with the local DOT to ensure the loop will be swept shortly before the race.

Mount up the Vitt’s and have a great race!!!

eventually sure, but not in one race.

if they are near death already then some nasty chip seal might not be a good idea.

I just tore down some chip seal on zipp tangentes at like 45mph (almost same tire) everything ok, felt much smoother than normal too!

(im not a stud, I wasn’t even pedaling, just downhill and down wind!)

Thanks there mounted…Always have to have something to fret about before a race. Guess mine is out of the way now

Thanks. I ride on that crap all the time. …Just not 56 on a road just done. Vittoria’s it is. Am glad for all round purposes I got a pair of those. Was going to get a 19mm Veloflex record for the front…
