I have removed lots of tubbies . They like to stick to the rim when I glue them. I hate fighting with a tire. I guess I am just a blade man like Paul. (When I am in a race.)
Dirt
I always have a spare tubular tire with me. I train on them . I use glue not tape . I use tufo s33 special tires . I use the flat goop stuff in the tire. I am old and want to finish every race.
I’m with you on not re-using old tires. I’ve never even ridden on a patched tube on a clincher! I knew a guy who used to ride all the time on tubes with 5 or 6 patches on them! It’s just not worth it to ride like that; a new tube is less than $5!
Oldy, I’m not talking about recycling OLD tubs, just brand new ones that cop a pin prick puncture after the first couple of rides. I was raised by grandparents that lived through 2 depressions, the cardinal rule in our house was: waste not want not - original greenies. I’m even using recycled electrons to make this post. Don’t care what you say about razor blades, I am not putting one near my carbon rims. I’m a peeler not a ripper Jack! Yeah, sure a retractable blade looks after the safety aspect, but it is just one more thing to pack, and when it comes to IM I like to make the whole affair as simple as possible. I take it you glue the tyre all the way around the rim then and don’t leave a small unglued gap - maybe you think leaving a 2" gap is dangerous, never had one roll off and it always made it easy to remove but to each his or her own.
S3s are pretty durable as far as flat prevention. But if you lock them up in a skid they will defintely get ripped to shreds on you. Happened to me once where it took off all of the rubber tread and I was down to the protective ply. But I didn’t flat and actually raced a few more smaller races on that tire.
I just moved to HICC lites, the same thing as a S3 but with a grippier carbon tread. Almost killed them in the first race as I was waved straight where I was supposed to have turned and had to do a u-turn to get back on course and locked them up executing the turn. The HICCs are just a little more confidence inspiring for any races with tight corners or a lot of turns that you’ll really lean your bike into. If it’s just a straight course with maybe a U-turn turnaround go with the S3, if the course is technically challenging the S3s never really seemed like they gripped that well for me.
Valves on both will need extenders for anything past a 30mm deep rim or so.
