Do USAT Board Member get paid?

Sorry for being so ignorant.

Do board members get paid? If so what do they get paid? Do some members get paid more than others? Are they paid to travel places? When and where do they meet and is their room and board paid?

What other perks do board members get, if any?

I’m sure each and every candidate knows the answer to all of these questions, and all of us poor ignorant bastards (insert my name here) should know too!

“Do board members get paid?”

no. but maybe they ought to. i don’t know. perhaps i could be brought 'round to the idea of a nominal sum, say, $2500 per year. i really don’t know, i have no strong view yet. however, in any case i believe any board that votes this in would have to exempt themselves individually from ever receiving this stipend.

they do have their travel covered. as for other perks, i don’t believe ANY of the board should have travel covered to races, including the olympics or worlds. you want to go to worlds, fine, but on your own nickel. the executive director represents the federation at worlds, both in voting and otherwise. the E.D. needs to vote the way the board directs him. any money that could’ve been spent flying a board president to worlds would’ve been better spent flying a massage therapist or a mechanic to worlds.

no.>>

OK, then what is all the wrangling about? What is at stake for being on the board? If it’s about the “future” of triathlon or what not, why are people pulling all these shenanegans to get elected?

yes, there could be some nefarious stuff that ANYBODY could engage in and enrich themselves. a city pays you money to get a national championship, a sponsor pays you under the table to get a good sponsor deal out of the federation, and so forth. either a board member or a staff member could do this, and one only needs to look (historically) at the IOC to see how “unpaid” members enrich themselves. fortunately, there is no evidence i’ve seen that compels me to think anyone has done this in our federation.

however, there is this:

  1. some people just love to walk around in these blue blazers that federation officials wear.
  2. some people make their money in this sport in other ways, and realize that a strong federation means growth in the sport, means growth in their individual businesses (timing companies, race direction, equipment and apparel sales, magazine subscriptions, whatever). nothing wrong with this. make the pie bigger for everybody.
  3. it’s nice on a resume.

If it’s about the “future” of triathlon or what not, why are people pulling all these shenanegans to get elected?
Because money isn’t the only thing that motivates people. Maybe all these shenanegans are being pulled by people who simply have strong opinions about what the future of triathlon should be and are zealous about enacting those opinions.

Good point, Vitus. But from what I’ve seen, those strong ideas about the future of the sport are not being voiced. Kinda like our upcomming presidential election (barf!).

I believe that some members of the Board of Directors of public companies (no employees) get paid some amount to attend meetings. The numbers that I remember hearing were $250 to attend by phone $1000 to attend in person for Condi Rice when she was a member of the Chevron board. I wouldn’t be opposed to my member funds being spent the same way, just at a lower amount.

Member Funds, hee hee
.

I’d love to get paid for helping run the association. I would feel terribly guilty receiving payment though. It also adds an element of hidden (or not so hidden) agenda to any board members involvement.

As to travel to events - where do you draw the line and how do you justify such an expense? I’m with Dan, no tickets, no travel to any races for board members. Now, if the Olympics are in NYC in 2012, I’ll be there - I live here!
