Have a Hed Jet 9 front wheel. Also have a pair of Hed Jet 6/front & rear and a Hed Disc. Am I really losing anything by running the Jet 6 front/disc rear vs. the Jet 9/disc. I’m a mid packer. Can average 20mph on a flat IM course. Hilly course I’m probably averaging 17mph so I’m not that fast.

Yes. Probably not a lot, but the Jet 9 is objectively faster than the Jet 6. Doesn’t matter what part of the pack you’re in. Now if you struggle with crosswinds and instability then just run the 6 because it’ll be more comfortable and probably result in having more fun while racing.

No you don’t need a HED JET 9. The JET 6+ is faster at lower yaw anyway and we always over estimate how much wind there is out there.
The Jet 9 is 2-3 watts faster than the Jet 6 per testing be aerocoach. That number was for a 75 kg rider going 45 km per hour.
I personally would just go with the 6. 2 watts isn’t a ton and the easier handling might mean less time out of aero in a crosswind
According to the guys at Flo wheels, the difference between a 6 and a 9 is approx. 7 seconds over 180km. Thats pretty much nothing.

When buying my HED Jets, I went with a 9 on the back and 6 on the front.
Agreed, more of a FOP here and no regrets for getting a jet 6. Can ride much more relaxed through the wind gusts that i can spend all of my time in the aero bars.

I saw this comment by you in another thread. Thanks for sharing this counterintuitive insight. Do you know or suspect whether this applies to all brands’ shape or specifically to the HED shape which stays wide for most of its profile? (unlike ENVE, Bonti, and Knight for example, which taper more)
I have a 7.8 set and love it, but I do sometimes get envious of deeper wheels. Knight 95 and Jet 9 just look so badass.

Sorry for the late reply. I still am not very on top of my responding these days as I changed my personal workflow a bit. Anyway, the 7.8 set is totally great. No need for anything deeper. If style points is your thing then rock it, but don’t feel that you need to rock it be your best on race day!
