Good point. I’ve only done a handful of trail runs and I’m usually pretty cautious on them just because I’m such a newbie. Perhaps trail shoes will help me get more confident on the trails too.
Great info, everyone. Thanks so much!

I use new balance 790’s, which are called a trail shoe but are mostly a near flat with some improved rock protection. This is like a 7oz shoe and the protection is fairly minimal. This is running shoe, and I most run on the road. I am a huge fan of these. I am starting to add some trail running and so far these work great, but to be fair I am mostly doing packed dirt trails without a lot of sharp rocks. I run gravel roads in these to and they do well.
I will see how they hold up to some more trail running. My #1 issue is that any trail shoe I put on these days feels like I am wearing corrective shoes like Forrest Gump as a kid. Any kind of built up heel or stability just feels terrible to me. As does weight.
Dawn,
Whare races are you doing? I LOVE trail races.
Check out the website at: http://www.5peaks.com/
There’s a series of 5 races all over southern Ontario. The first one is at Horseshoe on April 26th. If you sign up before April 1st, you get a discount on the series. I can’t wait - they look like so much fun! I’ve signed up for the Enduro distance at all five.
I just bought the Brooks Cascadia’s for 61 bucks at runningwarehouse.com. They are great shoes very comfortable and I also wear them as casual shoes too.
i got theese as well, 61 bucks NICE. Im a brooks wearer so it was definatly a good move for trail running.
Points are awarded for each race down to 12th place so if you show up for every race and place in the top 12 you could end up at the top of the leader board.
I was a Clydesdale last year (not anymore) and did a lot of the sprint distance runs. I did the math and figured that had I placed last in my category but made it to every race i would have won the series on points.
Well, I might make top 12 if there are less than 12 in my age group. ![]()
That looks awesome!!! I may be joining you for the series. I will have to see if I can fit it in. ![]()
Well there’s never more than a few hundred people who show up for the race so with the 5Peaks consistency pays off. But if you can only accumulate points for one series either enduro or sprint. So if you are going to do the enduro then you should do them all, if you are going to be a points contender or do all of the sprint races.
I’m hoping to make it to a few of the races this year. I’ll probably do them as brick workouts and ride to the race and then do the sprint race.
Another nice thing about the series is that all the races are run on a Saturday.
Well, I’m signed up for all of the Enduro races, so hopefully I’ll make them all. The most races I’ve ever done in one season is 3 so this will be a new one for me. I really like the fact that they’re on a Saturday. For some reason, that’s so much easier for me to schedule around family commitments.
Mark - Definitely try to make it to a few of these races. They look like a lot of fun.
