Do I Need to Change Skewer for Trainer Use?

Included with my Kurt Kinetic came with a quick-release skewer. But the skewer was not listed on the parts list, nor was it mentioned in any of the instructions or other materials.

Am I supposed to be using it in place of the skewer currently on my bike? Are there reasons why I should or why I shouldn’t?

I do since it takes 2 seconds to change and I don’t want to ruin my good one.

Not all skewers will fit in all trainers so when you buy a trainer they usually give you one that will fit.

I think the main reason to do it is that the trainer torques the skewer and loads it differently than when it is alone just holding the wheel. That is a whole lot different than the way they are designed to be used. So likely you need a stronger skewer or will damage any skewer and should road ride with a different one.

Definitely change skewers if your regular skewer has any alloy on either the lever or nut side; it will get chewed if you dont.

I use one of my training rear wheels with a heavy tire mounted when I put one of the bikes on the Kinetic. Has a bullet proof (heavy) steel skewer.

Thanks everybody for the advice. I’ve changed it.
