Dizzy for the first 20 minutes of a workout?

The past couple times I’ve trained - they’ve been either spin classes or swims - I’ve felt dizzy and lightheaded for the first 20 minutes, then it goes away and I’m fine. Since it resolves itself, should I not worry about it? Does anyone know why this happens?

Used to happen to me if I ate a lot of simple sugars about 1/2 hour before a workout. Something about an insulin spike. I’d stop, rest a bit, then my system would “reset” and all would be fine.

I had 12 oz of fruit yogurt about an hour before I spun this morning. You could be onto something with the insulin spike idea - I’ll try eating earlier and see if it helps. Thanks!

Here’s a link to my original post in regards to that:

Hope it helps.

If I dont warmup properly before a workout or a race this sometimes happens to me. For example, when I’m running with some of my friends who are a bit stronger then me,and the pace is mod-hard right at the start,it takes me a little time to settle in. Could this be the case with you?

possibly.

in all honesty, they should put a refrigerated section in the candy aisle for the flavored yogurt. I can’t take credit for this, but someone here referenced yogurt as a sugar-sundae.

/not that there’s anything wrong with it.

Happens to me anytime I eat prior to running.

I get this too if I don’t warm up properly, I accredit it too oxygen rushing to the muscles that are demanding at and forgetting about the brain. If I warm up slowly, I have no problems.

low bp?

I do have pretty low bp, why/how might that affect it?

Agreed, it’s like ice cream with a little protein in it - but Stonyfield Chocolate Underground, or Fruit on the Bottom in strawberry or peach, YUM!

First the disclaimer, I’m not a doctor and hopefully someone with some actual medical training will chime in.

If you put a heavy demand on your muscles, maybe inadequate blood is getting to your brain until your heartrate gets up. Maybe warming up slower would be in order.

This exact thing was happening to me. I found out I was anemic. Some Iron supplements and this has completely disappeared.

On a serious note… Yes, this does happen to me quite often after swimming. I find if I eat more prior to swimming and hydrate properly if doesn’t happen. Or maybe it’s because I’m looking over at the hotties in the next lane too much.

I’ve had similar issues. For me, it was definitely low blood sugar. I find one Life Saver right before exercise does the trick.

I’ve had that issue if I go and run without any exercise beforehand, but not for 20 minutes, more like 1 or 2 minutes.

I’ve found that I my HR stays low for the first couple of minutes then when it comes up I feel better. Probably the exact opposite as most people.

When I go to spin classes, I have a difficult time getting my HR anywhere near what my friends do and feel tired for the first 15 min of the class. After I’m warmed up I can get the HR up but still not much over 140bpm.

this is a very interesting topic. This seems to happen to me fairly regularly and I have never been able to identify why. The insulin spike is an interesting idea as it seems to happen far more frequently when I eat prior to running. The other item that seems to influence this (in me) is when the temps start getting cooler. No idea what causes this, but am interested to hear that others have similar experience, I thought I was the only one.

Is there a doctor in the house?

Yes, this does happen to me quite often after swimming

I think that going from horizontal to vertical might cause the dizziness after swimming.
I’m not dizzy AFTER workouts - it’s the first 20 minutes of them!

yes, do stop gawking.

That makes sense. Tomorrow I’ll eat a couple hours prior to my workout, and warm up slower, and see how it feels.
