Dixon study on PowerCranks Not Being Published?

So I was trying to put my new PCs on today and it looks like I need to have a square hex to get my own cranks off. Likely going to let the LBS handle this round, though I want to be able to switch them on and off myself (Guru frame + Campagnolo Record Carbon Cranks). I may just buy the square hex and put them on before the next indoor trainer class.

I’ve decided to go full time on the PCs until I need to do tri races and will go back to regular cranks the week of the race. I can see from anecdotal evidence that is the way to go and it makes sense to me. If only for the reason my regular cranks weigh a hell of a lot less.

I also do some road races in the late winter/early sprint - a marathon and a 10k - before tri season - and look forward to getting a running boost.

NEWay - was looking forward to the scientific study that was cited in abstract earlier. I do want to point out that it is not uncommon for studies who do post abstracts to never be fully released or published. I am familiar with studies done in a very unrelated but, process-wise, similar field, and have seen many promising abstracts only to never again hear about the study. Or the people doing them. Maybe the data wasn’t supportive enough. Maybe the researchers all got taken out by the KGB. Who knows?

So did the study publish yet or not? Was there a control group?

Without a control group, it’s hard to imagine that it gets accepted by a journal. Nothing wrong with the work itself…it’s just that publication standards for such things require control groups in order to justify any sort of meaningful conclusion.

But I don’t understand why a serious academic would do such a study without a control group. Or a control period. I suppose if he documented these same athletes were doing a similar training program prevously…

But surely Dixon knew it would be a waste of time.

On Monday I will attempt to give him a call.

Sometimes you do a study like that as a pilot study. That way you work out some issues, get an idea of the sample size you will need and also see if there is some effect there before you invest the time to do a full blown study. If you get something interesting with the pilot study, you will sometimes submit an abstract but not publish. It is common.

It takes a while to publish though. Once you submit, it is sent to reviewers, then back and forth for revisions. Some works are published more tha a year after completion. Getting out an abstract is quick and easy.

It’s all part of marketing!! Control group or not, you will get believers.

Under Slowtwitch rules, unless you’ve actually tried being in a cult, you can’t criticize cult-like thinking.

Just saying it like it is. No offense intended. Some people are just followers.
