The Discovery Channel Pro Cycling Team unveiled its truly bold new look for 2007 today. Fans of the team will have no problem picking out their riders from the pro peloton with the new kit’s predominantly black color scheme and familiar Discovery Channel world globe on the front and back of the team jerseys. “We’re really proud of this kit,” said Communications Manager PJ Rabice. “We worked very closely with Discovery Channel’s Ken Dice and Nike’s Margie Wargo to come up with a very unique design for 2007, and I think we really nailed it. I also think it’s something our supporters will not only appreciate when watching us race, but it’s also very cool gear that they will want to own as well.”

  • The team will officially wear the kit for the first time at their training camp in Solvang, CA in late January 2007.

Not sure how comfortable more black is in the heat and sun, but I think the more they can minimize that powder blue stuff, the better. Maybe it’s just the shift from the Postal uniforms, but I was really not a fan of the Discovery stuff from last year.

It would have been funny if the planet earth was directly in front of the abdominal region. The riders would have looked pregnant.

Crushed! When I designed my team’s kit, I totally forgot the bus and truck artwork!

**The black must not be a big deal as **Caisse d’Epargne-Illes Balears wore black last year.

What races are they doing??

Check out the decals by the bus’ front door. They look like kill emblems from a WWII bomber.

This is a pretty badass design. The first one I’ve seen in a while that made me consider dropping $200 for a whole set… but only for a few seconds until I realized that there is plenty of decent, inexpensive clothing at nashbar and campmor.

tee hee hee, now I can ask the big bellied guys outside the coffee shop if they only rode for last year’s team, or if the rest of their team clothing is in the wash.

The black must not be a big deal as Caisse d’Epargne-Illes Balears wore black last year.

Agreed.

  1. The black colour did not seem to slow Valverde or Perirea down at all

  2. With just about everyone else in the peleton going to all-over brighter and lighter colours in their uniforms - the predominantly black uniforms will show up more easily.

Wow, that’s a nice-looking kit. I’ve never been fan of the Discovery/Postal look before, but those are sharp.

I like the big image of the Blue Planet from space; it reminds me of Global Climate Change.

So…can money really buy everything? Disco is banned from the Pro team assoc. (ICPT)…which excludes them from the great tours and big one day races …well…they don’t get automatic entry anymore…

I’m fairly sure they will be invited though…but it gives a pretty good indication of the state of cycling…a big farce.

Huh? Why are they banned? What did I miss?

As I understand it, the ICPT has no official power to exclude Discovery from races. Discovery is still a Pro Tour team and will be able to race in all Pro Tour races.

Actually, that association is completely separate from the Pro Tour itself and doesn’t affect the teams’ participation in Pro Tour events. From Cyclingnews:

However, the decision will not affect Discovery Channel’s participation in races, as it retains its ProTour license. “It has nothing to do with the ProTour,” UCI ProTour manager Alain Rumpf told Cyclingnews on Saturday. “The IPCT is a company set up by a number of UCI ProTour teams to represent them and take care of their interests, but it has no official or regulatory relationship with the ProTour.”

too slow
.

The more black, the better… it has attitude.

Francois, it seems that all they did was get kicked out of cycling’s attempt at a union.

Without getting into the ethics or politics, “the group voted to exclude Discovery from its membership over its signing of Italian Ivan Basso, who is implicated in the Operación Puerto inquiry, according to a source that attended the meeting in Brussels. However, the vote does not mean that the American team loses its UCI ProTour license, which enables it to race in all of the ProTour events.”

I wonder if the black will make their athletes more likely to get hit by cars in training
