Disc?

Would it be a better investment to get a disc for racing or a nice set of deep rim wheels for training and racing? FOP guy with average speeds between 24-26mph. I’ve been using 30mm rims for training and racing the last few years. Looking at a flo disc/60 or a flo 90/60 combo

discs are faster most of the time unless the course is mostly climbing with steep hills or there is hurricane force winds out. A 60/Disc combo is a great choice

I started racing with a 40/80 then bought a disc after 3 IM. the disc did improve my times over the 40/80. I do all my training on a mt bike with typical 26" wheels and tires. racing on my tri bike is a joy after the mt bike.

This may be worth little, but when I put in a disc rear /60 ft into Best bike split, it saved 13 seconds over a 60/60 for 112 miles. It does of course matter on the amount of climbing winds ETC.
Also I race road/ crits as well, so 60/60 was a better all around bet for me.

How windy is too windy for a disc? It’s not uncommon to have 20mph gusts here and I’m only 140lbs

Oh go for it. I’m lighter than you and have ridden in decent winds greater than that.

Actually discs save very little when there’s light winds for FOP riders. At low yaw, a 90mm rear is almost identical. They save the stronger the wind blows. If you can only have one wheelset, a pair of 90mm wheels is best, unless your a sketchy bike handler, then go with a 60/90.

Weight…as always… is almost irrelevant and in some conditions, heavier wheels can be faster in rolling terrain or gusty winds, because they store energy on downhills and reduce your top speed and minimum speed…basically flattening the course which saves energy overall… and are more stable.
