Disc wheels at IM

I will be doing my first IM in April in Arizona and as a IM beginer, of course I read the rules. I noticed in the Bike section the rules state that no disc wheels or wheel covers can be used. Maybe I’m not understanding this disc rule fully. I have seen people with Zipp 909 wheels and HED. disc wheels in IM’s. Help me, I must be wheel dumb.

Which website did you read that on? You can’t use a disc in Kona, but for AZ that would be a rule change…

I read it on Trisite.com

Before I invest in a nice set of Zipp 909’s I want to make sure I can use them. Also, can you use Zipp 808’s at Kona? Thanks for your help.

I would just go by the event’s website. www.ironmanarizona.com

if you look at the photos, the vast majority used disks. i think the rules from that site you reference are regarding kona. i am fairly certain that 808s are ok for kona.

I used a disc for IM Arizona this year and will do it again this year if it is allowed. The winds were stronger than expected and there were some gusts that really got my attention but I still think that the disc is the way to go. After riding that windy day with a disc I became convinced that a disc is the only way to go on any course it is legal regardless of how windy it may seem.

They claim to be “triathlon’s largest website” not “triathlon’s most accurate website”.

My guess is they cut and pasted rules from Kona. All other IM’s allow discs to the best of my knowledge.
