Disc wheel - wondering if I should rent one

I am thinking about renting a disc wheel for the NYC Triathlon (relatively flat bike course) on June 27th. I’ve been told by the cycle shop that the disc can increase speed 2 - 3 miles per hour, but I’ve also been told by a very knowledgeable cyclist that if there is even a modest cross-wind it could slow you down. Last year I did the bike leg in about 1:10 or about 21 mph average and this year I think I can get to about 1:06 or about 22.5 mph.

So, forgetting about the cost to rent the disc, how much improvement can I really expect?

your knowledgable cyclist friend needs to bone up on his knowledge. there is no faster wheel to stick on your bike than a disc. the windier the better, well 30mph cross wind can be a bit dicey but i’d still use it. rent it and go fly. 2-3mph may be a bit much but 1-2 should be doable.
