Disc wheel with hitch rack

Is it a problem to put a bike with a disc on a platform-type hitch rack. I was thinking it might put too much stress on the frame from the wind, but also don’t know how much wind will get to it behind my SUV.

Anyone have any experience or opinions on this? Thanks.

I put my on a regular type hitch rack and it seems to be fine.

Take a training wheel with you and put the disc on when you arrive. Simple.

Thats what I do
.

Bad idea.

I put the wheel in the car and put a chain holder on my bike. I have something like this:

If it’s an SUV then the back end is pretty blunt. I’m sure there’s a big area of low air pressure, so your wheel won’t likely get much lateral pressure on it. Mostly it’ll be swirling winds. That said, if it’s a $2000 disc, I’d still trunk it.

I have always had my disc wheel on my hitch rack behind my minivan or motor home. Never been an issue.

I had a Sub 9 on my P3 on a hitch rack and I swear I got better gas mileage.

Just kidding.

I read on these forums that a big chunk of debris of some sort actually punched a hole in a disc while on a bike on a rear rack. Not kidding (about reading about it.) I’d keep it in the car.

eh, i wouldnt do it. i always bring my training wheel to all races during transportation.

Keep the disc in the car.

I would take the disk off. I just about lost a bike off the back of a hitch rack (behind a sedan) due to the force being placed on the deep dish wheels at 65mph. If my bike had come off at the speed it wouldn’t have ended well.

the problem with a lot of posts on st is that they answer themselves with a little common sense. Ask yourself how much this risk is worth to you and how sad you’ll be when you arrive at a race with a hole in your wheel or a crack in your frame. If you don’t care, more power to you and I’m happy for Zipp!

Put the bike in the car, or in the rack w/a training wheel. I drive to rides w/ my bike in a hitch rack all the time, but for races it goes inside the car. Don’t like having my expensive race wheels being the thing protruding furthest to the sides of my car.

10x on putting a training wheel on with disc in trunk not filled with much air but some that is what I do. But mine goes on top of car.

Q: What’s worse then getting rear-ended leaving a race?

A: Getting rear-ended leaving a race with your race wheels on your sweet rides on a rear hitch. Saw that at Timberman this year.

I had a mountain bike fly off my hitch rack when it was only attached by the rubber straps. It was a windy day and I guess it flew off with spontaneous gust of wind(the straps were attached correctly). I don’t know how much worse a disc would make it but I wouldn’t risk it if you have a training wheel.

A: Getting rear-ended driving to the race.
