I about to do IM Brazil. I’ve been racing on a pair of old Specialized trispokes for years and still love em. They’re clinchers, as are my Cosmics and all other wheelsets. I don’t really want to revamp my race wheel selection this year. I’ve been considering picking up one of the Renn or Hed clincher discs before the race.
Now then, I would like oppion’s from owners of both. Anyone go from clincher to tub and was just utterly blown away by the performance? How big of a difference is 300g’s (Zipp tub - HEDclincher). Is it really worth more than double the price? I figure the extra 3/4 of a pound could be the difference between taking an extra sh*t pre-race, but what do I know (was that too crass). Would I be better off on pairing trispokes or a trispoke and a clincher disc combo?
zipp tub is 960 grams, renn clincher is 1200 and the hed clincher is 1420. zipp to renn is a 1/2 pound poop. the zipp to hed is a 1 lb poop. just trying to clear the “air” on the amount of poop we are talking about.
I just weighed my '04 Zipp tubular. It’s actually 1002 grams with Shimano 8/9 hub. The Accel II disk was actually 960 grams on the nose. I was going to make some clever comment about wiping, but good taste restrained me.
As I understand it, the greater tire-rim discontinuity for tubulars makes them slightly less aero and this might offset any weight advantage over clinchers. And what’s more, tubulars have greater rolling resistance.
Keith, I too am doing IM Brazil and am taking my new disc (that I got from Frank last week) out for a sprint distance tomorrow. Frank forgot the the 700c clincher Campag 575 he made for me is nearer 1100 than 1200 so that is a s**t and a piss!
The friends of mine that have Corima discs are impressed with the trueness of Franks work, so I would say if you can get one from Frank in time to do so, and we will have an easy way of spotting each other at bike check in!
I went from tub to clincher and was blown away by how much of a pain in the ass clinchers are. It is a very good thing that flats are safe and easy to change, as you get lots of them…
Anyway- if you can wait for a Renn clincher, please do. There is no compelling reason that you should pay twice or three times as much for an excellent wheel that is of better quality than either the Zipp or the Hed. I have owned both Zipp and Hed products, and I still feel like asking Zipp and Hed for a refund after having bought the Renn. Zipp is overpriced, and Hed is overpriced AND overweight.
So I would just put a Renn disc on order and enjoy the absolute best disc on the market.
Listen my fuzzy eared friend, you’ve got to put some air in those new tires. There are only two reasons for clinchers to have more flats. Either you didn’t pump them enough and pinch flatted (inexcusable) or you got crappy tires. Both my wife and I have been using Verdstein clinchers and have had great performance from them.
Or, you can find a great used disc and save tons of money. I’ve used HED, Zipp and Campy. All used, all excellent discs, but, I’ll keep my Campy that I paid next to nothing for!
I am not going to go into why I just hate clinchers. I had decided to not really pursue the argument anymore. Everyone knows my stance, and I ain’t beating dead horses anymore.
I will say that Conti Supersonics, the lightest clincher tyre, was the culprit, along with Michelin (which I think is a French word for shit) Axial Pros. Ever since then, I went back to tubs.
Will do. I’ll be at the Jurere Int’l, blue P2k, maybe with a Renn. We’ll see. I was there last year. You’ll love it! Learn a little portuguese: directions, ordering food, etc. I had directions shouted at many times during the race and it helped knowing which was left, right, straight ahead… Also, I had a great time flirting with all the girls on the water stops. Really kept me going in a couple of tough spots and they thoroughly enjoyed it too.
Boa Tarde, Keith. I’m staying at the Chaundra (booked through Ken G) and will be on a Blue IM Kestrel Alpes front, Renn rear. I have been taking Portuguese evening classes and think ordering and directions are sorted, just need those verbs to gel!
We will be taking a couple of day trips to get away from the “scene” pre week, maybe we’ll meet up on the course ride the Sunday before?
Beleza! Muito bem. I don’t arrive until tuesday. I booked thru Ken as well. Excellent service. If I’m not mistaken your hotel is conveniently located near the expo and start/finish. I chose Jurere for the same reason. Keep in touch with me via e-mail. I have a good friend here who’s from Brasil. His family has a summer home in Floripa. He’s giving me a list of restaurants, shoping areas, etc all in the city proper.
Have you any idea what the extra weight is w/shimano dura ace 11/21, 20mmtyre, and tub?
I just received my 700c clincher today, and it was 1207g bare. With a 52g skewer, 205g tire, 80g tube, 8g of Velox and 173g for an 11/23 my rim weighs precisely 1725g (3.8lb) dressed to go. And it is just about the truest wheel I have ever seen, with damn nice bearings. The freehub clicking echoes through the whole rim though…but then again I almost never coast.
