I have a zipp disc that I bought in 1997. I have had problems with the hub from time to time. For example on the stand, if I turn the pedals to get the disc moving and then stop the disc continue to turn the pedals, which I think is really odd.
At IM Wisconsin, the zipp factory rep put a layer of oil at the base of the cassette body to help the hub out and that made a great difference in how the disc felt.
I am looking to replace the hub on the disc and was wondering if there was any other disc hubs that I should consider other then zipps new hub? Any help would be much appreciated.
I probably have the same or at least similar Zipp disc. This hub works by having the internals ride on a film of lubricant. If the lubricant wears away, the hub performs poorly. You are supposed to lube it every 500 miles.
Zipp will replace the hub for about $250. That probably isn’t worth it, but it is an option.
I’ve had excellent luck with all of them. I just bought a 2003 model to use at IMW. The new hubs are a substantial upgrade over previous versions. Bill Vance of Zipp tells me they have nicer bearings and a hub shell machined to much higher tolerances thanks to a new milling machine (I’m not an engineer, forgive my possible error here)or fancy four axis lathe that is also used in the wristwatch making industry. Anyway, we’ve sold a lot of them (20+) and the newer 2002 models seem to be pretty darn nice. Might be worth the hub upgrade. My .02
I also heard that ZIPP has a superior customer service. I would call them and get a RA# and send the disk back to them. I had a zipp crank that is out of warranty but they still fix it for free
Oh come on- You know this is a PERFECT excuse to justify a '03 model!! After all, what other major expence could you be in need of 1200 clams? A wedding? You’ve been stressing about this wheel for years…Time for a new one brother!
I know. I wanted to get you back to the front and I am curious as to how things went and what you are riding now. My friends call me whiskers. Killing some time too.
Sorry for my ignorance. When you say lube the hub…how exactly does this work? Im assuming a litte phil’s on the end of the hub. My does the same thing by the way.
