Disabled Pro?

This question is partly directed at Dan since he sits on the board, but I want to know everyone’s opinion too.

A member of my tri club is blind and hence races as a disabled athlete in that he needs a guide to complete races (they swim side by side, ride a tandem, and run elbow to elbow). He is an excellent athlete (~2hr olys and a few sub 2hrs) and meets the qualifications for a pro card.

So my question is, when he does apply for his pro card… what happens? He needs his guide (who is also going for his pro card) to compete in races, but are there by-laws or general gripes about him riding a tandem for example that could prevent this?

I’m also curious if when he applies for the pro card if he can even be considered for denial based on his disability because of the federal disabilities act? Or does that only apply to jobs and such since USAT is a fee-based member organization.

Please, thoughts…
