Direct Mount Trainers

TrainerRoad has me motivated to spend time on the trainer as the cold season comes in. So I’m looking at upgrading my trainer. Looking to save tires and be quiet. (I live in an apartment)
Looking at…

Cycleops Silencer

Elite Turbo Muin

Wahoo Kickr (I already have a power meter. Probably over the top)

Who’s got experience with these trainers? What do you think?

If quiet is one of the criteria then a direct mount trainer may not be the best option. They are louder than their fluid trainer counterparts. I have a Wahoo KICKR which is noticeably louder than my KK Road Machine but not too bad. At the other end of the spectrum is the Lemond Revolution which sounds like a car revving up in your house.

my Turbo Muin is the quitest compared to my other 2 fluid trainers.

I echo your comment. I just changed from a KK Rock and Roll to a KICKR, and was quite surprised the first time I tried my KICKR, it is definitely louder than the KK. I also live in an apartment, so noise is a consideration, but I wouldn’t say the KICKR is excessively loud that it would bring any noise complaints.

Tires second, but very quiet. Fluid unit is near silent or silent.

I’ve actually mulled getting a nice spin bike with a powermeter built in (spin bikes are pretty darn quiet) which can be had for the same price or cheaper than what you are looking at. Most likely I’d also swap out the factory saddle for a nicer one that I train/use on my main bikes though (would still have to figure out how to get that to work though).

Or if I really had some money to burn one of those Tour de France spin bikes or something along those lines.

DC Rainmaker has a new trainer article out:

CycleOps Super Mag Pro is silent. Only drive train and a little tire noise.

As for wearing out tires I don’t see how it’s possible. I put over to 10K miles on the original cheap Specialized tire from my Allez sport. It dry rotted before wearing out on the trainer.

I considered doing this as well but instead of getting a built in power meter (which suck on all the spin bikes save the one from Saris afaik) I was going to get a cheaper spin bike and go with Garmin Vector pedals. The only reason I didn’t go this route was because I couldn’t find a spin bike where I could change the crank lengths to match my fit on my TT bike
I need 170mm cranks and just about every spin bike out there is 175mm and the 5mm does make a difference for me.
