For those of you that have both a road and tri bike, what is the difference in drop from the seat to the handlebars on both bikes. Right now I have my road bike at about 4cm difference and my tri bike at about 6cm difference.
I have both bikes set up so the angles of my torso, arms, legs, etc. is identical on each one. The difference is that I am rotated back and more upright on the roadie. Same exact position, just rotated in space.
My tri bike drop is about 20-21 cm, and it’s about 9 cm on the roadie.
My tri bike in TT/short course mode has about 20 cm of drop to the handlebar (not aerobar pads). My road bike is now at about 7-7.5 cm, but I’m going to experiment with going lower in 5mm increments.
On the subject, I can’t help but notice at races (especially today @ the Muncie Endurathon) how many bikes are set up very non-aggressive. We’re talking aerobar pads even with the saddle. And many of these were full aero bikes (Cervelo, Griffen, Litespeed, etc) with disc wheels and the like. I think that many of these riders could have saved a lot of money by investing $100-150 in a bike fit instead of $1,500 on fancy wheels.
I have always been so tight in the hams and lower back. I am trying to lower the bars on both bikes a bit at a time. Part of my problem is that I have never been able to touch my toes. Not even get close. Working on it but get frustrated after a while. Going to massage right now to work on the tight calfs and hams but really have to focus on stretching more. The only way that I will get lower is to stretch a lot more and do something like Yoga. WIP for sure.
I don’t think flexibility plays as important a role as people think when looking at drop.
You can be inflexible and still be comfortable with a 17cm drop. It’s a question of getting the reach right. If you shut down your hip torso angle too much then there is a problem. Move the seat forward open up the angle and you can go as low as you like regardless of flexibility.
The only limiting factor seems to be seeing where you are going.
An 18 cm drop on a road bike. Man I just love ya more the more i find out about you. I am amazed because I am Captian Inflexability and 12 is enough to rip my hamstrings in two.
I am with Tibb’s. I can not go so low. After riding for a bit that is it. I think flexibility does play a role. I have never been flexible to the point that I can not get much past my knees. Alright maybe a hand length past but not much more. The funny thing is that I have never ever been injured. I have been fitted on both bikes but wanted to go a bit lower to see. I have been lowering the bars a little at a time on both bikes but know at some point I will really need to work on my flexibility to make it comfortable.
