Did you earn your M-Dot?

I would only worry about this if I based my accomplishments/goals/aspirations on what others say. Thankfully I don’t

yeah, I remember reading that and thinking this guy is a real idiot and stands for everything that triathlon is not. personally he isn’t worth responding to. But while on the subject since I haven’t done an IM, I was thinking about a 70.3 tat. But then again I didn’t go to clearwater so I guess I shouldn’t

found him listed doing a couple sprints and olys. looks like a real guy, don’t know if he is an ironman, in any sense of the word.

I don’t understand. Mike Reilly announced that I was an Ironman when I crossed the finish line. Did he just make that up?

I saw Chis spank everyone at IMCDA last year. Yeah, he’s a real slacker.

You are right of course…we shouldn’t really care what an obvious a-hole thinks…but for some reason his attitude, and the fact that it was in print in Triathlete Magazine, really got my goat. I guess it really burns me when people try to put other people down because they didn’t do IM fast enough, they aren’t “racing” Ironman, or they’re too fat for IM, they didn’t “respect the distance” (whatever the fuck that means), etc, etc, etc. I like triathlon mainly because 99% of triathletes are supportive and helpful to newbies, not elitist assholes, and I hate to see jackasses like this get any sort of publicity.

Sorry, rant over…

Spot

Wow, I guess I didn’t catch that it made it into print at Triathlete…very interesting. Almost reads like it’s a “plant” just to try and stir something up…?

I’m changing my handle to Charlee (w)ho?

Not idiotic at all. People are talking about their magazine. Makes perfect sense.

YaHey is just trying to get a rise out of someone. Don’t fall for it. Next thing you know YaHey will tell you you are not a doctor because you did not do a brain transplant. Just an idiot trying to get a rise.

BTW, your cousin is hot.

Hehehe

Yeah, I was un-phased by the comment, no worries. Doing an ironman isn’t about the title anyway. That’s kind of silly to me.

I’ll let Bri know she’s becoming a celebrity in the tri world. I think she just might join our peaceful little tribe someday.

Jodi

Actually, my point is that the whole discussion of “earning” an M-Dot is quite ridiculous.

Is Jodi a doctor? A doctor like in MD medicine? PHD in Physcology? Doctor of Science? Destist DDS/DMD? Jurius Doctor? There are a lot of types of doctors. I think MD’s consider themselves as the only true “doctors”, but society gives the title to all sorts of people.

It does almost read that way…here it is as printed in Triathlete (posted from http://www.tdottriathlon.com/letters/did-you-earn-your-m-dot-2.html )

http://www.tdottriathlon.com/letters/images/letter-of-the-month-image.jpgI just picked up the March edition of your magazine (Triathlete Magazine) and read the article by Dave Wallach (“Light Read,” March 2007.) First of all Mr. Wallach, you are not an Ironman. There is only one real Ironman race, and that is on Kona. The WTC may have partnerships all over the world and license out the Ironman name to all different races, and these races may be very challenging and well run, but they are not the Ironman. They don’t have the lava fields, winds, the Energy Lab and other things that make the Ironman the Ironman. With all due respect to your friends, let me tell you flat out: No, they do not deservethe M-Dot until they cross the finish line in Kona, they have no business calling themselves an Ironman. I don’t want to take anything away from them, but Coeur d’ Alene and Wisconsin are not Kona. Let me tell you that Chris Hauth did not win the Ironman in Idaho last year, because the Ironman is not in Idaho; it is in Kona. What he did is very impressive, but he did not finish the Ironman, so he does not deserve the title Ironman. The Ironman is not just about completing a 140.6 mile race.

I have done several Olympic-distance triathlons. I have even done some pretty fast times and won my age group many times. Does that make me an Olympian? Absolutely not, and I would never try to pass myself off as one. And you are wrong to try to pass yourself off as an Ironman. Frankly, it is insulting to me and everyone else that has completed the Ironman.

it’s assholes like that Yu guy that make me want to quit racing Ironman…for every 10 great people, there is at least one asshole out there that does more to harm the sport than the 10 great ones do to help it.

if people would stop using triathlon as a way to measure their penises and just start enjoying the sport, it would be a much better place.

leave the dick measuring to the morons driving the rice rockets with loud stereos
I don’t think I’ve read the article yet , but think I’ve got the jist of the thread.

I am of the opinion that anyone who crosses the finish line in an IM is an IM ( under the req’d 17 hrs ).
I lucked out and scored a lottery slot to the big dance in 05’ after completing IMWA 11 months prior ( 12.55 )
Knowing that I was “exceptionally lucky” to be racing in Kona , I thoroughly absorbed the experience and did my utmost to be prepared and do my best. I think , by far the majority , of lottery winners have the same approach.

By equal measure , there is probably at least half an IM field at any given race, who have not been to Kona and are substantially more qualified to have raced there than myself , or most other lottery winners.

I’ve never really understood this need for separation amongst certain individuals. Separate yourself in the final standings.

Yea Martin, I finished 140.6 under 17 so I am an IRONMAN.

Dave

yet another example of how trolling has officially become mainstream in both “news magazine tv shows” and actual magazines.

a simple artifice to evoke the maximum screeching. move along folks, nothing to see here…

Hummm… Yes it is, for the vast majority… How many 140.6 miles long events other than the Mdot Ironman events have more than 300 participants?

Fred.

I did Kona before there was any kind of qualifying, I wonder if I am an Ironman? I thought I was.
Funny how we get suckered into respond to these people.

This is really good stuff:

"I have done several Olympic-distance triathlons. "

So, even though he hasn’t finished a race longer than an Olympic he is insulted? He’s not even speaking from personal knowledge. It’s not worth the bandwidth to argue over.

I want to know what a t-dot is. I guess that site got a few hits out of this .

pfffft.
