Did we elect the wrong Bush?

Laura Bush on Larry King Live–

Regarding gay marriage: “I think that we ought to definitely look at it and debate it. I think there are a lot of people who have trouble coming to terms with that because they see marriage as traditionally between a man and a woman, but I also know that when couples are committed to each other and love each other that they ought to have the same sort of rights that everyone has.”

Regarding abortion rights: “I think it’s important that it remain legal, because I think its important for people for medical reasons and other reasons.”

I thought this was going to be about Jeb, and I was going to agree.

I still do.

My thread title was more or less whimsical, of course. But she does convey the common sense that would might expect from a real person if all the ideology, sophistic argument, and need to appeal to a “base” were removed. Isn’t a shame we can’t elect a real person to the White House?

I know we elected the wrong Clinton. George would have rocked the place. Atomic Dog for your ass.

Form follows function; we’ve only ourselves to blame.

Don’t feed the trolls.

I think most people become more sane once they have very little chance of being in any political position. I seriously doubt Laura Bush would have said this or carried these opinions as a Republican President.

Watching people “Prep” their positions in politics to match the way the wind blows is completely maddening to me.

“I think most people become more sane once they have very little chance of being in any political position.”

On the surface, one would think that voters would regard sanity as an asset rather than a liability.

There are a lot of people in history that seemed to have “common sense” until they were elected.

Power corrupts, absolutely power corrupts absolutely…I think power corrupts ones sanity as well. Until we remove some of the power out of political positions politicians will continue to be insane

“There are a lot of people in history that seemed to have ‘common sense’ until they were elected.”

As Matt pointed out, Laura Bush would not have been likely to espouse such views even before an election.
