Did Potts flat/what happened?

What happened to Potts out there today? Steller swim and run, but a 2:23 bike if i am not mistaken. Even on an off day he is still not 10-11 min back from the main pack at a 70.3? I had him winning but was sadly mistaken that between the mile 13 update and mile 30 update he was nowhere to be seen.

bump , I want to know, he was my pick also.

Same question. What the hell happened?

There’s something in this article that says that Crowie ended up finishing on a wheel Potts had at the start? Not sure exactly what the heck happened though:

The article says that the support crew had switched out Potts’ front wheel in transition because of a valve issue, fixed it and stuck it in a support vehicle, and ended giving it to Crowie when he flatted. Potts may have flatted independently, but I didn’t see a mention of that anywhere.

That was my understanding too, that this was a flat/wheel issue pre ride. I would have thought that if he was having a bad day that his run would have been off as well, yet it was quite good. From previous (70.3) he tends to try and stay with the group, thus i would doubt that he laid off the gas that much during the bike.

It is amazing how quickly this stuff gets around… I am one of the Ironman Staff mechanics and was involved with the whole Potts/Crowie thing today. Potts had put latex sealant in his tire that hardened and clogged the valve. We could get no air in or out of the tire in transition His wheel was switched with one of our Tech wheels. While they were on the swim we fixed his wheel but needed to get out on course, so we put his wheel in place of our Tech wheels. Crowie flatted and ended up getting Potts front wheel. To my knowledge Potts had no problems during the race itself, but we don’t hear everything.

My understanding from Kestrel Facebook is that he didn’t push, but used it as a training event for Kona.

I heard Craig didn’t push either.

(I made that up, but could be true!)

Yeah, I was wondering what happened too. I wa volunteering that day, taking down race numbers as they exited the swim. Andy had at least a two buoy lead, maybe more (kinda closely spaced buoys, though) on the next swimmer and just rocked through transition. As I watched him go by, I really thought I was looking at the winner.

That bike course is tough, though, and it’s at altitude, all of it between 2-3,000 ft. Not that much, but enough to notice. The air temp was mild but heated up, and the roads were a little slick from the rain the night before and the usual car-oil runoff that always happens when it hasn’t rained much in awhile.

hmmmm…

I thought I read somewhere that some of the pros had some drafting penalty issues…I’m not sure if Potts was one of them though. Based on his time, it appears that could explain some of it.

Thanks for the input. Do you know anything about Crowie rear disc that you can share? Stinger? Special stinger? How it fit the P4.

I read the same thing, but I’m pretty sure he wasn’t one of the ones with a penalty.

It is probably the previous generation stinger rim which was not nearly as wide as the current generation. Those “Pro-totypes” have been around for several seasons with HTC-Highroad etc.
