Did not wearing an aero helmet cost Macca the world championship last year?

He lost by 71 seconds to Norman, and he wasn’t wearing an aero helmet.

Or was this topic beaten to death last year already?

Beaten to death… I believe it was something like Macca would have passed out on the bike from the heat if he had one so thats why he didn’t wear it.

Grant

Yes, it was beat to death last year. However, I don’t remember the specific post.

Not wearing an aero helmet didn’t cost him the win. Him being slower than Stadler cost him the win.

It’s the engine, right???

You can take your pick:

  1. No aero helmet

  2. Used HED wheels instead of Zipp wheels

Both of these cost him time.

Simple answer: no. The draft zone at IMH is ridiculously short, so Macca can easily sit behind (legally) several other cyclists and that saves boatloads more energy than an aero helmet. In order to go any faster, he’d need to setting the pace, which he was not. Given the tactics he used to approach the race, it is a much better idea for him to wear a regular helmet, which is well ventilated, as compared to an aero helmet. Nobody would ever let him get away off the front, and he is a not a strong enough rider to pull a Normann and blow by everyone, so his tactics are appropriate. He just needs to make sure Faris has all the best equipment. I’m sure he is excited that Faris has improved his position and has a fancy new Cannondale. I’m sure he’s much happier about that than about his own new stuff.

And yes, this topic has been beaten to death…
