Okay, y’all marriange-minded and curious people, why don’t you read this:
Personally, I’ve been aware of this for a very long time. The “value” of diamonds was created largely by hoarding, marketing and Liz Taylor.
“Okay, y’all marriange-minded and curious people…”
I see you’re from New Jersey. Since I am from Lower Alabama, I must correct your grammar. Every good Southerner knows it’s “Okay, ALL y’all marriage-minded and curious people…” Yankees!
A diamond alternative worth investigating is moissanite. If she MUST HAVE a diamond try a non-DeBeers cartel supplier (canadian diamonds?)…

First of all Max, thank you for the link. It was a fascinating and well-written read. I really enjoyed it. Very cool.
Secondly, as fabricated and convoluted as it is, I think giving a diamond engagement ring is a charming convention. The one time in my life I did it I did it with the right person and it meant the world to her. I kept the ring after we went our seperate ways since it is kind of part of my (and her) personal history. As I mentioned in another thread, she and I (and her new husband, oddly enough) are very close friends.
As Taku also pointed out in another thread, I had a great shopping experience at Tiffany’s. The entire thing is a good set of memories that I’ll always treasure.
Very cool. As someone in the advertising business, and coincidentally someone who last summer put a new P3 several times over (or at least the equivalent of) on the finger of my soon-to-be wife, I found the article a fascinating case of branding. I’ll be forwarding this to the rest of my company tomorrow.
Thanks again. And it’s one of those charming conventions I take joy in adhering to.
