Diabetics Question. Thigh Stap for meter

I tried the search but no joy. I think I remember seeing a post about a thigh strap to hold a glucose meter and strips.
My wife has started running longer and when she goes low there is not a warning and she falls quickly. Tried a waist pack but it interfered with he infusion sites and cgm. Arm pod is OK but looking for a different option as she holds gels and glucose there.

Thanks

Hi! My daughter is diabetic and is a runner, so we have had similar issues. I don’t know about a thigh strap (sounds very uncomfortable, though), but I can certainly recommend a particular piece of attire that is perfect for all female runners, including diabetics. Your wife should check out the running skirts at RunningSkirts.com. They have 2 nicely sized pockets on each side of the skirt, both of which can be secured with a small velcro strap that runs along the inside of the strap. I would think her glucose meter in one pocket and testing strips in the other would work out perfectly. My daughters and I wear RunningSkirts for all of our runs and they are the greatest things ever. Not only are they super cute, but they last forever, are super comfortable, and are perfect for long runs. Best wishes to your wife!!!

Hi there,

Has she considered an ultra light running pack or vest? I don’t have a CGM, but I have a pump. I run with a hydration pack that carries water, gels, cell phone, glucose meter, and strips. Before that, I ran with a basic Nathan waist pack strapped over one shoulder and under the other arm as to not rub on my infusion sites.

Does she not trust the CGM to be accurate enough while she’s out exercising?

Another issue - a thigh strap would be the last thing I’d want to be running with because of chafing issues. From my experience with the diabetes thigh straps, they are not attractive at all (imagine a baby sock sewed onto a plain old elastic band) and have issues staying up or are made for all sizes with an awful velcro closure.

If packs or vests are not her thing, have her look into any of the Spibelt products (http://www.spibelt.com/) . She can wear that higher up on her waist above the CGM and infusion set sweet spots or get something similar to the wrist pocket.

I am using a spibelt (pump, glucosemeter, lancets, gel). No problems whatsoever, can be put on very tight which prevents shafing.

Possibly a stupid question, but if she is running with a CGM, why does she need to take her meter and strips with her? That’s kind of the whole point of a CGM, no?
Yes they need to be calibrated with a meter every now and then, but it should be good enough to run with. I’ve done ultras with just a CGM (that’s why I got one in the first place, so I wouldn’t have to mess with meters during a race).

All that aside, the times I don’t use my CGM and need to have my meter handy, I use a spibelt. holds everything and doesn’t bounce around.

good luck!
Dave

The cgm has been a great tool for her but sometimes when it does a low alert it is to late. She did order the new pump that will shut down at a specific setting but lately she runs with her pump suspended. She can go from 80 to 40 in a couple min. and she does not feel it. Having the meter is more piece of mind than anything else. I went and looked at some belts last night and they are much better than I had thought. I think that will be the best way to carry all she needs. Thanks for the ideas.
