Di2 now or later?

thinking about investing in the dura ace di2, but i was wondering if it would be best to wait for the 2nd gen. version. (when will that be?) i dont want to get it now and then in 2 months the next version comes out. thoughts?

When v2 comes out, assumes with some of the wiring from Ultregra, you may then need to decide to go with V1 on sale or V2 at yet higher price. Unless you need it now, probably best to wait.

I vote never!

I think it makes a bike slightly worse overall, especially when the bike doesn’t have a good integrated solution for the battery.

Will be 18 months for gen 2 Dura Ace. But it’s been suggested by Shimano that DA Di2 versions 2 would be compatible with the current Ultegra Di2.

So for road bikes, Ultegra DI2 is the way to go now IMHO, for TT then either bite the bullet and accept you’re buying something that should last well, but be obsolete soon, or stick with cabled for now until Ultegra TT Di2 is released in 12 months.

I’ve jsut gone for the second option and bought a traditional cabled groupset as an interim measure.

Do a blend of kits right now and have teh best of both…Ultegra shifters, FD, and RD; DA Casette, crank, brakes, and BB.

For road or tri? Right now for a road bike i think the ultegra version is better than DA, straight up.

until Ultegra TT Di2 is released in 12 months

It used to be 12 months, but now it’s “mid-2012”:

It has to be said that’s not a view shared by many people riding it. I have tried it. It seemed pretty sweet. My wife has ridden it for a season with no issues and loves it.

Still not sure I want electronics to creep onto a bike though. Seems to be opening the floodgates that little bit further.

id hold off, new durace is going 11 speed - so ui2 will too eventually, shimano always makes it tough on the consumer - way too much planned obolescence

get chorus 11 - then do some upgrading when electronic comes out, or just wait till it comes

I installed in on my tri bike about half way through the season. I was w/o my bike for about 3-4 weeks b/c I first got a bad battery, then a bad rear harness, then bad brake shifters. Shimano was an absolute and inexcusable nightmare to deal with over the warranty issues. Completely inexcusable, IMO, for their “flagship” product. They were slow, sent the wrong item, fought with me and the lbs about warrantying parts, and were generally unpleasant.

That said, once every was working, it is awesome in every possible sense.

I normally agree with Jackmott’s comments but not this time…
Di2 is superb. Every shift is spot on, even under pressure up out of the saddle. It never mis-fires or ghost shifts, and if it needs a realignment (eg change cassettes), just press a button and it’s sorted. No messing around with turning screws etc.

The battery hardly ever requires charging and the electronics have survived a lot of tropical storms, heat, dirt and punishment where I live. After 12 months heavy riding I’m definitely converted and wouldn’t go back. The only downside is the price.

to my understanding the current gen di2 bar end tt shifters and TT brake lever / shifters are not compatible with ultegra di2 (different wiring).

I also understand that it will be at least 6 months until ultegra TT stuff comes out, and the next di2 won’t be available to very late 2012 or early 2013… And if you want the new 11 speed you also need new rear hubs of course, the current di2 is fine with any shimano / sram cassettes you currently have.

My take is that it’s not worth a year to wait, bit the bullet and go for it…

100% awesome in every way. I have been riding it for a year and love it. I ride 6 days a week. I have charged the battery like three times. It takes under 30 minutes…zero flaws.

One of the best things I have purchased…

Get it now… I will never haves bike without it.
