1:03:02 swim, 5:40:29 bike (2:43:04 + 2:57:25) ---- it looks like he took his own advice fully to heart!
what was his advice?
Always hide your EPO and steroid injections sites.
It’s on page 4 of the forum index – “Ironman LP Advice for First-Timers”. There is some great stuff there, not only his but also that of other posters.
… and he had a great race. 10:33 for 96th overall is a solid day for Dev! His new method of tapering (Ie. hammering at the Peterborough half 2 weeks prior to an IM) and crashing into minivans and destorying his bike seems to have agreed with him.
Yes, and Peterborough was just 3 weeks after he qualified for LP at Muskoka! He was going fine, for sure, but I think it’s the van thing that put him over the top (as it were!).
Allan,
Do you know Dave Denison from Belleville? He’s a local real estate agent with no previous elite athletic background, just an average AG’er who got into the sport late and on his first IM after a few years of sprint tris. Did a 1:13 swim and a good bike split. He’s one of our regular group riders.
Go Dave!!
Nice job Dev! Congratulations.
I don’t know Dave but it seems that there are a number of tri-geeks from the Quinte area having good races. Dennis Hills did 12:20 in his first IM and I think that the long course at K-Town was his previous longest race. From the results it looks like a place where the “older” age groupers can do very well overall. Does anyone know if the prize money for women thing is going to happen there next year too?

next year the woman’s only race is CDA and LP is men only.
The top third of the front page of the Ottawa Citizen sports section today is a photo taken momnets before the start of the IMLP swim. Nice coverage – if you overlook the large-print title “TAKE ME TO YOUR LEADER” in reference to all the be-goggled and be-capped athletes. Yuk yuk.
The caption under the picture is lengthy, and includes Dev’s name along with those of the four other Ottawa-area athletes who finished in the top 100 yesterday (38th, 76th, 92nd, 95th, and 96th). Not bad for a region where the outdoor cycling season is relatively limited!
These long, drawn-out, fine-tuned, detailed and totally monitored IM training programs are way over-rated. JFT and have fun, and often racing is the best way to do this. But people will make up their own minds about this sort of thing and do whatever they want.
Fleck
Well, guys thanks for the good words. First of all, I have to agree with Fleck that these new school “take it easy” drawn out tapers and scientific plans don’t really work for me. I like the old school method of doing several races every alternate weekend (and thereby forcing my overtraining mentality into many mini 2 days microtapers) and getting used to race day psychology and training long the other weekend. Granted, my leadup to LP is not what most coaches would recommend and truthfully speaking I would not recommend it to most as it does not give optimal results (but it is lots of fun)
May 28th weekend: 90K easy ride - 90 min half marathon pace bunny at ING Ottawa Half Marathon
Jun 9th: Epicman training day 3K swim/180K bike/21.1K run
Jun 17th: Muskoka
Jun 24th: Tupper Lake Half Ironman
Jul 1-2-3: IronTour LP
Jul 10th: Peterborough Half Ironman
July 24th: Ironman LP
Part of the reason why I posted that advice thread was to remind myself what to do…and trust me, I did get caught up in a bit of racing before 8 hour elapsed and had to keep reminding myself about the second half of the marathon…Really I only have myself to blame for my stomach issues as I tried to eat too much too quickly at “race intensity” (see below for details).
Here is what I posted about my race on another thread :
Me, I had a nice race on the Joe Boness Lite program (2 half Ironmans and an Ironman spread over 4 weeks).
As usual, got hammered during the swim in 63 min (I was hoping for closer to 1 hour), I had was having a great bike holding back on all the climbs for around 110K and then my stomach bloated out the size of the Michelin man. Anyway for the last 70K of the bike and first 10K of the run, I had to totally cut back on my pace and allow my stomach to settle, rather than push thru. Then just after the first run turnaround, my stomach went back to normal and I went on one coke and a salt tab for one station and a gel and a coke at the other station and I was going good running around 8 min miles. Around mile 18 the wheels started coming off a bit (duh…of course, it happens to everyone), so I just had to hunker down and continue putting one foot in front of another (walking is 2.5 miles per hour, shuffling is 6 miles per hour…so don’t walk). With 4 miles to go near the ski jumps, I got a second wind and managed to do the final few miles at sub 8 min miles. I had a royal battle going with my good friend and training partner Chris Macknie. Chris won the 40-44 age group at Tupper Lake, so he really put som motivation for me to haul ass. In the end, Chris used his sub 2:50 marathon speed to outkick me.
All in all a great day. My last race at LP was 12:30, ended in the medical tent with 4 IV and some serious health issues, which I have largely overcome over the past 2 years. Yesterday, was 10:33, 26th in the 35-39 age group, a PB on this course and most importantly, a PB run of 3:44 (OK, so it was only a PB by a minute). What was interesting, is that I only did two 2 hour runs over the past 3 months. Aside from that lots and lots of biking. I guess, I was able to tap into some of the run base that I laid down this past winter training for the Boston Marathon.
Now, I have to decide if I want come next year, or try and qualify/get into IMC for 2006. I have to decide quickly, cause this LP race will sell out by the end of the day.
Dev
PS. I got in line and signed up a buddy from Ottawa for LP 2006 and went back to the hotel and asked my wife if she wanted to go to Penticton or back to Placid. The answer was Placid, so 15 min later working over a 28.8kbps dialup connection I’m back for LP 2006.
Congrats Dev! Remember what I said at Peterborough … “Tapering is for sissies” I may be in for LP next year but I’ll be waiting until Muskoka to decide (which means of course that I’ll have to be fit in June next year).
congrats dev:-) I was on the bike course biking backwards cheering and same on the run until 11 pm and had a blast. that is an amazing performance, I am very proud
Dev…you looked pretty good coming back from your second loop (as I was slogging through my first). Great job and great finish!!
As a side note I have a new found respect for all IM athletes and IM distance races in general. After a dismal 13:24 finish, I am hooked for life and will be back in 2007 to pay that course back. I owe it big time…race report to come. Should be a good read
M~
Good race dev, I can’t think of how many times on the bike I would see someone blow by me and I would just think “He’s a first loop stud…see you on the run buddy” I garuantee if I had not met up with you for EpicMan, Tupper Lake etc, I would have won the race to T2, and ended my race half way through the run. Much thanks to you and the other guys and gals, I didn’t do so well in the race to T2, but a bit better in the race to the finish line.
A year ago I had never biked or swam before and went into my first IM with some virtual experience that I had not yet earned, but stole from you guys…I got second in my age and am kona bound…Thanks alot Dev as well as everyone else that let me hang around as a true newbie poser…
Scherman…you were a mega stud. Remember what I told you at Tupper Lake. Its not important what you do in June. What is important is what you do in July. You were like Lance, peaking for a July 24th victory, while the rest took the spoils in June.
Congrats on your studly 3:23 run and podium in the 18-24 age group. I’m proud that we had six athletes from Epicman qualifying for Kona and 4 on their respective division podiums (Marie Danais, Mike Scherman, Zoe Panchen, John Heatherington, Barry Dmitruk, Chris Macknie). Barry passed on his Kona slot and is doing a Joe Boness triple Ironman year (Wisconsin and Florida yet to come). I draw more satisfaction seeing all you guys learn at my training camps and events and go to Kona than my own performances !
Allan, looks like you will have to do the Epicman-Muskoka-Irontour-Peterborough buildup…tapering is for sissies :-).
Marisol, was out on Mirror Lake Drive from 10:30 pm to 11:50 cheering, walking and jogging beside the late day finishers. It was very cool.
Marcus, any finish is one to be proud of. Don’t sweat the finishing time. There are millions of children around the world who don’t get to eat on a daily basis. We are just lucky to be playing this Ironman game (…and it is truly just a game for grownups…)
