Devil's Kitchen Triathlon is Postponed until Oct. 4th

Shameless promotion to follow (it’s worked before; without ST, there’s be no AmZof):
CM2 Promotions, Inc., the folks who bring you the American Zofingen ultra distance duathlon, are pleased to announce the inaugural Devil’s Kitchen Olympic Distance triathlon to be staged Saturday, August 29, 2009.
The 1500 meter swim will take place in the beautiful North Lake, Haines Falls, NY, in the Catskill Forest Preserve at 2200 feet above sea level.
The 26 mile bike leg descends to the valley below and returns by climbing the legendary Devil’s Kitchen ascent which gains 1000 feet in 2 miles and was the showcase challenge back in the days of the Tour De Trump.
The closing 10K run will be mostly paved and not nearly as hilly as the bike ride; we may be cruel and you may be masochists, but we also want you to have fun.
Details and online entry will be posted within the next 48 hours at www.cm2promotions.com
Thank you.

Bumpity bump bump.

Sounds like an awesome race.

It should be. I hope you can join us.

Bike Studs, this should be the race for you. Here’s a shot of your playground;

That’s looking down Platte Clove Rd; about three miles long, 12% average grade with the top about 17%. You’ll hit that approaching twenty miles with another nice climb back up to North Lake to follow! You are going to love it!

If a course can be more beautiful than AZ, this is the one.

Best of luck with the race John, I’m trying to nurse a strained groin through Xterra Lake Placid and it might be my only race for the year.

Wow - that’s a GREAT pic. SWEEEEET.

I’ve always wanted to ride up Platte Clove Rd. Be extra fun if I happened to have a timing chip on.
Hope I can get a weekend day-pass for it, since it’s the weekend after Timberman, so it’s not a given that my pass will be approved.

if john gets his race start on early enough, you could race this and be home before the kids were even expecting breakfast. right?

i will look into getting that saturday off

i may have to ride to p clove and back from my house, about 85 miles or so

just did that greylock ride, about 94 miles, amazing pavement over there, and a scenic 9 mile climb

amazing what 2 beers a day instead of 10 does for you, i think i picked up a free mph.

l will try to be there

Sweeney, don’t scare everyone off! It is true that Platte Clove Road forced euro pros to walk back in the day of Tour De Trump. Anyone conquering this one can lay claim to true studliness. The Devil’s Kitchen climb is a “dream crusher”.

The beauty of North Lake should make it all worth it however, that and the descent down 23-A. What a rush!

Yatesy, so you’re sticking to the beer diet? Good for you.

I’m 5 days into mine and have gone from 168 to 159! Lugging an extra 9 pounds up Devil’s Kitchen would be its own circle of hell.

Hey Tetsuoni, this looks like a great event, but too late to change plans for this year. Perhaps next year. We’re doing a Timberman weekend and then hanging local for the rest of the fall. Work is/has become pretty heavy over the past month and the pace will only get worse in Aug and Sep, so I want to minimize triathlon related out of town exersions.

This should be a fun event…did I actually see ML committing to entering an Olympic tri?

Dev

Anyone conquering this one can lay claim to true studliness.

Alternatively, true tripliness. No hill can withstand the full onslaught of a 21x34 (front/rear combo). I crush the dreams … of hills! Bwahahahaa…

Dev, I know it’s kind of late but it’s sort of our M.O., e.g. come up with a good race, sit on it for way too long, throw it together at the last minute so that only a very few show up then let it grow organically through ST posts and word of mouth.

Pencil us in for the last weekend of August 2010. Maybe Lance and Team Radioshack will be there

Dawhead, the RD reserves the right to restrict gear selections appropriate to the studliness of the rider. So, for you, expect a limit of 42 x 19.

Online entry is now open at http://www.cm2promotions.com/CM2_PROMOTIONS/Registration.html

Please note that the race choices appear once you fill in the requested information.

From Wikipedia

Platte Clove, sometimes Plattekill Clove, is a narrow and steep valley in the Catskill Mountains of New York. It is mostly in Greene County, although the lowest portions are in Ulster County.

Along with Kaaterskill Clove on the other side of Kaaterskill High Peak, it is one of only two breaks in the Catskill Escarpment. It was created during the last Ice Age as meltwater eroded its way through from the Catskill Plateau to the Hudson below. The stream that evolved is today Plattekill Creek.

In the early 19th century, early American artists were struck by the rugged, wild scenery of the clove and other locations in the northeastern Catskills. Depictions of this wilderness by Thomas Cole and others led to the artists being dubbed the Hudson River School.

A narrow, two-lane road that climbs 1,200 vertical feet (366 m) in 1.4 miles (2.2 km) from West Saugerties along the clove’s north wall is the only route through it. Trucks and buses are banned from it, and not maintained or even plowed between November and April. The Tour de Trump bicycle race was routed through here, and the road proved so steep that even some of the top bicyclists in the world had to get off and walk their bikes (it was raining that day).

Thinking about sticking 1 more tri in. Anyone in on this? Not too far away from home either.

This hill uhh… sort of makes me think a Tri bike is not worth it. 2 miles @ 11% does that sound about right???
