Devilman RR

Like many others i was using the devilman half as my first race of the year and a chance to test the waters and see how things were progressing.

With another half coming up in two weeks this slightly shorter race would give me a good chance to test some things out and see where everything was at, and have time to make at least race adjustments for little smokies.

The weather was calling for high winds and thunderstorms. good news is the rain held off and it got hot and sunny (i love racing in the heat), bad news is the wind got a lot worse than initial forcasts called for and was steady in the 30-35mph range on the bike with gusts a lot faster.

Swim and bike leading into the race were WAY down from last year due to a number of things, but ran has been up a lot in an effort to get that under control.

The swim was NASTY. Sort of what i imagine it would be like to be swamp thing. when you can smell/taste the water before you even get close, its a bad sign. The plan here was simply to swim a steady pace and save it for the bike/run. with the wind picking up and my lack of swim training this winter i thought that would be a much better use of my energy and would lead to a better race overall. All in all it was a solid swim, and i came out of the water right under 25 min (guessing the swim was a lot closer to a mile than the .8 it said?). LONG run to transition where i passed a lot of the guys that outswam me,
and then quickly out onto the bike course.

To say this ride crushed my soul would be an understatement, and there were many many times throughout the hurricane where i found myself swearing outloud at the wind, my bike, and anything else that i could. I had a bit of trouble pacing this, as there were times where i spun out of gears, and others where i didn’t have enough to keep me in the cadence range i wanted (and some of this going both directions due to gusts/changes). I came off the bike right around 1:52 or so, battered, ego bruised, but legs feeling pretty good all things considered. another long run back to transition (i think this race should be advertised as having 4 runs, not 1, for each run to and from the bike course, and the run from the water).

I have never been so happy to get off my bike and start a run in my life. I came out of transition quickly and laid down a solid first 1.5 miles a bit faster than goal effort/pace, and then slowed down to what i thought i could hold for the next few miles. the sun/wind and open run course deff made things interesting, but i grew up running in corn fields like that and just put my head down and started trucking it, and hoped my legs would hold out.

the last 3 miles i started picking up the pace, and tried my best to hang on. came through the line in 59:30 for my run for 6:47 pace (or if the course is as long as many are now saying it was, 6:24 pace, please be long, please be long).
Managed to break into the top 5 and by far my best longer race to date.

Awesome race! Persevering through that bike to have such a quality run says a lot about your mental toughness, and early season conditioning as well. I would be willing to bet that your half in 2 weeks will be a day of crushing dreams!

thanks!

I just got a text from a friend of mine that raced and he also said his garmin showed the run longer @ 9.28mi.

so, assuming all these reports (up to 5 now with garmins) are right, i am completely thrilled with how things are looking.

How were du nats?

Sweet. Congrats on your high placing.

Ahhh, flat tire at Du Nats. Avenged it (slightly) today with a win in Prospect Park. Great run though! Sick pace after that bike.

thats awesome!(not on the nats though).

I actually had some registration issues (that got found and then worked out last min) that almost prevented me from racing, and was about to sign up for prospect although deff would not have enjoyed running in the same race as you;-)

You came in 8 minutes before me on the bike . I had no legs left after the bike. I think some bricks are in order for the upcoming week’s Where are these corn fields you speak of ? I cpould use them LOL. A pack of bikes caught up with me on the bike to which i would get caught on the slight uphillls or strong headwind. So I gave them the pass and about five bike length’s till I would catch them again and pass. All to be done 4-5 times. Maybe I should have sucked it up and made a 5 minute sprint pass them. I really tried to save for the run. Didnt work out good. Saw a Motorcycle come down and I noticed he wrote a cuople bike #'s down. Also had a official check my helmet in transition. That was a first. I did a few minutes faster then last year . Same placing, think my bike was faster last year as I flatted last year. The level of competition was a lot higher this year also. As per my car odometer and polar watch the run was spot on. Bike computer had the bike about a mile long. Which would make sense if the sprint distance was 20.5 miles. No way the half could be 40 miles since it is double loop.

were you in the 4th rack from the swim?
get checked early (helmet) before a lot of people showed up? if so i was jsut down from you near end end of the 3rd rack by the swim in with the white/black p3

great job though winds were not as strong as you said…more like 15-20 steady with gusts into the high 20s…still very demanding (especially with a 1080/sub-9 combo) but way short of 30-35 sustained…I’ve raced in those conditions and it’s way worse than what we had yesterday
.

were you by any chance on the BMC right across from me?

Think so second rack from the end. The Lucero lite

yep saw you walk in
.

Should have came over and said high though I am sure you did not know who I was .

Looked you up for results. How did you do?

haha yeah had no idea who you were at the time.

5th OA

Your looking at a fast season. Me I have to go back to bike/run bricks and learn how to run off the bike all over  Luckily only have Oly’s and sprints on my plate now. Runs looking a lot easier off 40k . Not looking forword to Central park though. Might have to take a few trips up and run there.

u bet–again great race!

how’d you end up finishing?

well the good news was that I did! solid swim. ok bike–hip flexors tight so hard to get a lot of punch on the bike–only could do 250 watts. run was horrible as expected…good news is hamstring seems to be healing–hoping I can really start running again in a week aor so–just 8 weeks to IM Germany and Kona on the horiizon after that–yikes!

Also, I’m coming to the conclusion that this old age thing is really beginning to make me slow down–quite depressing!

sssssshhhhhh,

as i get older, i’m going to go with the “the older i get the faster i was”
.
