In the thousand Island tri today he was 3rd overall, beating me by 10 sec. I didn’t know how good a swimmer he is (not that bad, but you have a weird recovery), but he had a great bike (I was constantly looking back trying to figure out where he was) and then passed me with 2k to go on the run, I tried to keep contact but in the end he had the 2nd fastest run (On a VERY slow/long course) to edge me out of a podium spot… great race!
and it was great to meet some of the ST kids…
Hang on here. The only reason why I beat the stud Dave Clinkard is:
He chose to go without wetsuit. I had the 90-120 second advantage of a QR fullsuit
The swim was short by at least 3 min, catering to my weakness, although I actually have worked on my swim since Ironman LP and it showed.
Being on the backside of the age curve (actually being forced to race 40-44 due to my birthday being before Dec 31), I expect to get soundly thrashed by the young 21 year old whipper snapper Dave.
I think 21 years of racing experience also helps. For crying out loud, I raced my first tri in Kingston the year Dave was born !
In any event, it was great to see at the ST boys and girls at the race.
For those wondering how the P3SL worked out, it was my third ride on it and while I am still trying to get dialed, in, it certainly did well. My run was reasonably strong and I have to attribute it to doing all those “bogus” bike commuting miles riding my powercranks at high RPM…now don’t all of you go out and buy em now :-). Seriously, I have done no high end running intervals since the Boston marathon, so I am unsure where the quick run came from, given that I was ahead of several sub 2:45 marathoners like Pat McNealy and Mike Adamcryck.
Dave, good luck at the Esprit Olympic Tri in Montreal on Sep 17th. I hope to be there if all works out well on the home front.
Dev, the man of all distances, it seems. Kicks butt at HIM, races strong at IM, and places top 3 in an OD! Now we want to know: How do you do it, Dev? Must be all that X-country skiing in the winter. Perhaps it’s time for me to move up north?
Congrats Dev, you are my man!!!
Kus, I am originally a sub 12 second 100m sprinter. All this triathlon stuff is way too long for my fastwitch body, but I’ve been trying to brainwash my muscles for 21 years into thinking they can last longer than 12 seconds. I’m still trying to become an Ironman stud like you. I need to participate in the next Olaf Ludwig-Udo Bolts-Stefan Kusurelis east Deutchland camp in Rostock to learn how to race Ironman properly. Are you guys inviting Jan, or is he too soft for the Udo Bolt training program ?
In any event, its not really that studly. This race is a fun local tri, with not a totally stacked field of top age groupers and pros, so its a bit of a cherry pick to get on the podium with a 2:04. Even if the bike and run are a bit long, it was equalized by a short swim.
Dev, looks like the POSER times are over :o) You are a STUD now.
In terms of being faster at IM: Run longer than 2 hrs. and bike more than 2000k.
(just kidding)
By the way, I’m leaving this thursday to train for ten days in Dan’s Xantusia. Call your boss and tell him you are sick and join me for a solid week of training. Perhaps Udo Boelts will show up?
Stefan, I could barely take 2 days off for Ironman LP, no chance to take 10 days off even for the Bolts-Kus-Slowman-Bjorn camp…I just started my new job 2.5 months ago, so I am saving all my vacation for 11 days in France/Alpes/Italy May 20-31 next year.
Clinkard is the real deal. He would have been 2nd overall if he wore a wetsuit. Not only did he lose time in the swim, but his legs had to be more trashed for the bike and run. The kid is only 21. He’s gonna pop some serious times in the next few years.
stud?
actually I was talking to my girlfriend, and her brother has apparently procured a can that has stewie griffin on it, labeled “stud in a can - turn a dud into a stud”, and i was joking I should take some, (thankfully) she said i didn’t need any
and wetsuits are for chumps, I hate wearing a wetsuit, I couldn’t wear one for k-town on account of the whole cast thing, and now that the cast is off, I love the feeling of not having pounds of weight dragging me down, so i decided just to race without a suit… and beside, i gotta work at being a stud, dev’s had 21 years of practice so i gotta fast track the catching up!
Congrats Dev, Looks like you’re racing every distance really fast this year!
ps. I did a bad thing today and ran 22.5 miles with some marathoners averaging 7:19/mile so I was waaaaaay over 2 hours and I’m not even racing an IM this year
Hey, BOTH of you looked mighty fine to me, charging towards the finish shortly after I had set out on the second out-and-back! I’d love to have some part of the 24 minutes you each put on me! I was happy enough with a 2:28 and first in the 55-59 a.g…but guys like you put matters into perspective pretty clearly - alas and woe. Nice meeting both of you, though, and also Michael B and Irongirl. Fine day, great race!
Allan, looks like you’ll have to do that 2:30 marathon that is sitting in those legs. Either that or 4:10 at Ottawa Half Ironman !
Steve B, congrats on winning your age group. I just hope I am running in 15 years when I hit 55-59. You guys totally inspire us “young guys” to keep going. Trust me, I appreciate each pedal rev and each step in my life. I really don’t look past the next workout as you don’t know what may happen along the way. By the way, I had a great 60 min Mtb ride with my son this evening, followed by 20 min of basketball in the driveway…just a late day “kids” duathlon
don’t flatter him too much!..if you keep his head growing, i’m going to have to hear all about it during the school year…he’s bad enough right now as it is
but seriously though…he’s come leaps and bounds in the past couple seasons, lots and lots of hard work, and it’s nice to see it’s paid off.
he would have been scary had he not broken his arm…
You are a fast dude. I remember being surprised to see you at the run at Placid in July on track for a ten hour finish. Great job man. You are flying- but it’s really no surprise to me.
I thought that hot pink swim cap you wore might have had something to do with your fast swim time. I came out of the water with you and then watched you ride away from me (that didn’t take long).
I noticed on trirudy that you’ve been swimming at Shirley’s Bay - are you swimming this week? If so, I’d be interested in joining you.
Dev-Stud, remember when you told me on our run in Placid not to stop my arm swing on the movement towards back? Why do you think that is important? Is it to even out the opposite arm that’s moving forward?
Thinking I was doing OK on the bike…I heard a whooshing sound like leaves in a strong wind…a big pressure wave trying to push me into the gravel…the blur of a black anodized frame and then he was gone over the next hill…Fast twitch body…my arse! Cool to see you guys going so fast.
Great race everyone sorry not to see many of ST crew after the race, it was a fine day, great weather+venue and a lot of fun.
