I’m not talking about boycotting the show- I’m talking about boycotting the sponsors of the show, and the sponsors of every other show that openly advocates violence against cyclists. Sooner or later, maybe they’ll get the message.
Although if this jerk actually owns a 7-11, it’d be great to see it picketed.
Is there a lawyer on the forum who could give some indication of whether a incitement to commit murder or something along those lines could potentially stick? Even if this is a two-bit show, it would be good to go after one of these jackasses to scare the next radio moron.
I think someone knowledgeable posted on this topic last time. The problem is that the incitement has to be taken as an actual call to perform the act.
For example, the people on this thread suggesting we go hurt the DJ would not be taken as true incitement since nobody here really believes it to be a true call to arms.
If the DJ suggested a concrete action taken at a specific time and place, then the act or something very similar occurred in very similar circumstances then it would be incitement.
Ok wait. I’m not defending anyone but until I hear the show or read transcripts of the show I’m not stating my opinion. There might not be fire in theater.
That said here’s a good example of what should be done. This guy put a website together with audio clips of the Don Miller show in Atlanta. Pretty sick stuff. Take a listen.
I know several members of the Wolverine Sports Club who sent similar emails and each got some smart ass reply. I was told by the Program Director to tune in to their Outdoor Show if I didn’t like Greg/Michelle…I replied that maybe he would like to tune in the Outdoor show where his wife gives oral to a group of cyclists…he hung up :o)
That sack of sh*t better watch his ass. I riding on Hines this weekend I get something tossed at me, I pretty much directly place blame on him. Its not that hard to find someone, I emailed him will see what I get back.
Not sure how it works in the US, but in Canada you write to the watchdog and that forces the radio station to keep the tapes. I am in one of those procedures right now against Q107 (for the same moronic reason), although it’s moving very slowly.
I am a bit troubled by the deragatory comments from several people here. I won’t single anyone out, but how can we expect anyone to take us serious when we make violent and derogatory comments in response? We can use the excuse that we’re only joking, however, I’m sure you’ll get the same response from the DJ’s. It only hurts the cause. This is a public forum, just like the radio, and responding in this way doesn’t help. I’d rather embarass these people, and scare them a little by getting sponsors to threaten to leave, it seems like a better way to go to me. At least that’s my two cents.
Unfortunately a lawsuit is unlikely to work. Unless they say something like “Go find a cyclist now and hurt them and throw bottles at them NOW!”, specifically, freedom of speech protects them. “Shock Jocks” know the laws when it comes to the air waves.
This happened in a couple of other cities, Cleveland and Houston. All Clear Channel stations. We sent a bunch of letters to the FCC, and the FCC looked into it, but they can’t do much about it.
We got a couple of local sponsors to pull their support of the Raleigh station.
Supposedly Clear Channel sent out a memo at the end of last year not to do the show any more becuase it costs the company too much money, and since then I don’t know of a Clear Channel station that has aired a similar show.
The metioned station is owned by Infinity Broadcasting. Look at the above link for all the things we did for ideas, and good luck in your fight! Maybe we can get Infinity to do the same thing as Clear Channel (if it actually worked, we’ll know as time progresses).
Guys, this whole thread is playing right into Henson’s hands. I guarantee, if he knows about it, he loves it. He lives for reactions like this. I can almost hear his antagonistic laugh right now. Please don’t try to out-a##hole this a##hole. You won’t win.

Gerard.
Gerard,
Be advised that a complaint will be filed with the Southfield Police Department (law enforcement agency with jurisdiction for WKRK offices). The complaint will request an investigation to determine if this broadcast was a effort or conspiracy to incite others to commit great bodily harm, or murder in the event someone is killed. Or if by admitting to what they had previously done or were going to do, the hosts were guilty of violating any criminal laws.
Standard procedure, if an investigation is conducted, would be for the police department to request a copy of the broadcast for review. In the event that it was the opinion of the police department that criminal laws may have been violated, the matter would then be turned over to the prosecuting attorney’s office.
If an investigation is pursued, perhaps the station management will begin to understand the seriousness of such irresponsible broadcasts.
The police department may, at the very least, feel compelled to go through the motions of an investigation to “cover their butts”. This would still send a loud message to the station’s management.
A group petition to the FCC, with copies to your Federal and State congressional delegation and a copy to Clear Channel Communications definitely will get their attention as well. I have had very good luck in the past with my congressmen getting things done. Pressure comes in many different packages and from many different “senders”.
Also, find out when their license is up for renewal. Then ask the FCC for a public hearing and time to speak on the question of whether they have used their license responsibly. It’s been awhile since I was in D.C., but ideas like this have worked before.
Don’t do anything stupid like attacking one of those bone-heads, and why bother calling and harrassing them? Raise the level of the discourse a few feet and you’ll get some reaction from somewhere.
That’s a good idea. I went to the station’s website (I’m unfamiliar with the station and don’t listen to them) and found out they are one of those stations who carry Howard Stern, Tom Laikis (sp?) and other broadcasters whose stock-in-trade is the outrageous and sensational.
In general, they have little or no credibility. While there is certainly danger that some of their listeners may not see the obvious satire and tongue in cheek nature of their sensational commentary, there isn;t any substance to what they are saying.
Bottom line, the best thing to do is tune out. Sadly, I didn’t listen to them in the first place and I doubt many of us did. So my comments (I sent them four e-mails) don’t amount to much.
