Detox and juicing

Does anyone have any experience with “toxic relief” by don colbert, md. My wife is getting into this which means it will affect my diet. Talks about liver cleansing diet for 2 wks then periodic juicing and of course eating more fruits, vegs, lean meat etc. I know we tri people tend to eat better than most folks, but I know mine tends to be in spurts.I am interested in any input on this.

Thanks

Consistent superior nutritional habits beat short term fasting or detoxing. Why? Because superior nutritional habits are sustainable. They are naturally detoxifying, support longevity, your fitness, the quality of sleep, emotional well being, energy and your immune system . Simple but not easy.

Sheesh! Better living through eating right!!! I clicked this thread looking for something interesting about giving up drugs ! Now I’ll just have to go to my regular boring world and read another post claiming that riding a P3C can cure your cancer and get you an AG spot at Kona .

You are a surgeon and you are asking about this?

“Detox” is almost invariably garbage, although the diets given can sometimes be good diets that is for reasons other than their ability to help you clear (always unspecified) toxins from your body.

If you really are a surgeon, then you should be familiar with the operation of the body’s own detox unit, the liver.

Rob

It is all BS. Don Colbert is scam artist proving PT Barnum right.

There is no evidence that any of these detox schemes do anything.

In the real world of science, theories get tested and the results get published in peer reviewed journals. There are no such studies showing this stuff works.

Just eat right as best you can.

Yes I am a surgeon and yes I am asking if anyone has any experience with this. Cancer is multifactorial with "switches that activate cancer and suppressor genes that keep cancer suppressed. There are multiple things that activate-deactivate these genes. First and foremost your family history is the most important likely followed by smoking, but you are kidding yourself if you think things we eat(pesticides), breath are exposed to do not play a role. I deal with cancer everyday and see these people grasping at everything possible to survive. I am not a naturalist and I am a pretty good age grouper top 25%, but I am a hell of a better surgeon. I figured since we take pretty good care of our bodies that someone may have experience with this. I agree it is likely hocos-pocus, but eating healthy, organic, and avoiding refined sugars are pretty standard.

You are dead-on, except the ‘organic’ bit is pretty over played, unproven and, if you want to be honest, mostly unsustainable.

detoxing is a complete scam. for a review on this subject:

eating more fruits, veggies, and lean meats can’t hurt though =)

Great, thanks for the link.

Trisurgeon? Are you a doctor?

Anyway, I just caught the tale end of this on the news the other morning on the radio on the CBC and they had a medical doctor on their who had recently wrapped up a study that said all this detoxing and cleansing stuff was a waste of time. He said the best approach is a balanced, healthy and nutritional diet. It’s boring. It’s not that sexy, but it works!

**** said the best approach is a balanced, healthy and nutritional diet. It’s boring. It’s not that sexy, but it works!

Which is why it doesn’t sell well. People don’t want to hear about common sense, they want the glitz and the glam shortcuts.

That’s crazy talk. Next thing I know you are going to say we have to swim/bike/run more to improve in triathlons.

There has to be a short cut, no matter what the cost.

You are a surgeon and you are asking about this?
LOL- my though as well.

They’re MD’s.

A 'taint made of carbon nanotubes- increased grundle comfort=better aero position=18.74% reduction in drag=7.3 free watts in a 150# male triathlete. The fatter you are, the greater the gain, so hit Burger King on your way to the pool!

The fatter you are, the greater the gain

Now that’s something that could sell.

Is there a reason that surgeons should know all this stuff?

Perhaps - not saying it’s right, but I think that generally speaking the public holds Medical Professionals such as Surgeons to a higher standard of general education and knowledge. Now, my Step-Father is an Orthopedic Surgeon, and I am sure he would not no what’s up with DeTox’ing. I am sure that if I asked him, he would say, that’s why you should have a good Scotch, once a day!!

Ha ha! Yeah, that is pretty much what I was getting at. It's hard to be an expert in everything and biomedical science is not exactly the province of most surgeons. Now the scotch idea... I might try that one... ;)
