Desoto T1 Users - What do you do with your goggles and cap?

After a disastrously slow T1 at the Mooseman International race this June, I have been practicing my T1 transitions. I have an old, used DeSoto T1 without the zipper. I can now get it much faster than before, although I’m still slow.

The question I have is what do I do with my goggles and cap while taking off the top. Since the T1 has to come over my head I need to take of the goggle first and I put my goggles on under my cap so my cap also needs to come off. But then I am at a loss as to what to do with them. I can’t just throw them down because I am trying to get off the top as I leave the water and jog to T1.

Thanks,
Victor

Hold your goggles and cap in one hand and, as you pull the top off, just drop them inside the (now inside out) sleeve when you pull that arm off. Simple.

Steve

ditto.

I remove the top immediately when I stop swimming, while the googels and swimcap still is on. Then I lift the goggles away from my eyes, but keep them on my hed. I completely remove cap and goggles after I have removed the T1 bibs.

I just unzip the back, grab both side of the top from the back and yank over my head while the goggles and cap are still on. This happens while I am running to T1 so I am blind for 2-3 seconds. Everything comes off with the top and the cap and goggles stay inside. I know that one day my head and goggles will get stuck in there, hasn’t happened yet.

Yep, works like a charm.

I sometimes lift the top a little then shove the cap and goggles into the bibjohn. You can easily do this while running.

You don’t need to remove your goggles or cap before the T1 top - they will stay put.

Once you have the top off, pull off your goggles/cap and hold them in the same hand as your top. Then slip out of the bibs as you’re running to your bike.

I tried it that way the first time, but just did not feel right. What is nice about getting the cap and goggles off first and in my hand,
when I take the top off, I leave them in the arm sleeve so I do not have to worry about holding more than one thing.
Nice to have a few different options.

Dave

I lost some Rx goggles in the water by just pulling the top off. I try to remember to pull them off first, then the top.

Oh, I like that idea. That leave both hands free to peel off the top.

I’ll give it a try.
Thanks,
Victor

i’ve done the peel-off both ways described by the respnses to this post. i like the following best:

  1. lift goggles off eyes
  2. reach back and unzip the top
  3. reach up and pull off cap+goggles in one movement, with thumb under cap and grabbing goggles between thumb and forefinger
  4. with cap/goggles in right hand, reach back with both hands and start getting the top ready for the pull-over action
  5. look and decide just where i want to do this/when i am ok with no sight for a couple of seconds
  6. pull up and over, with arms still in top sleeves
  7. pull out left/non-cap-goggle arm
  8. pull out other arm, letting go of the balled cap-goggles mid-arm
  9. hold top in one hand as i get the free arm in under the bib strap and sort of shrub-shove it off-----exactly as shown in the photo posted
  10. do the other, then run like mad for the bike
