I know fatigue is setting in with Trump and racism and his love it or leave it solution to our nation’s ills. Sorry to beat this horse further, but in the thread of the NC rally and the chant I think no one really called out the actions of the “around half” of the audience (as estimated by one young attendee in an NPR interview) who yelled the chant. The posts were all about Trump.
There has also been a lot of related H. Clinton discussion, was she good or bad? incompetent and the reason for trump’s win? But no reference to her deplorable basket of people comment.
I thought to join these two thoughts in a new thread. I have no problem calling the people who shouted the chant at the rally deplorable, and while it was very costly for Clinton to give voice to that label, she was accurate.
In the political arena we find ourselves in now, would it still be a death sentence for a democratic candidate to go full condemnation attack mode and say the basket of deplorable american citizens is for real and is filled with those chanters?

Yeah, but the catch is she did not define who it was that qualified as deplorable. A large group of that fat part populace just played the victim card, bought their T shirts, and inferred that they were the slighted ones in the basket. Gave the buggers a charge, “how dare that uppity Clinton broad call me deplorable!”
Trump has already gone low road and attacked his class of deplorable citizens. My premise is to limit the deplorable basket fillers (on the other side) to just those chanters. Now if the fat part of the curve wants to join them as fellow chanters so be it. I would hope this wannabe chanter group is small. If we are going to divide on race, inclusion into the wannabe chanter crowd could be used as a better metric on defining racism and it sure would be an eye opener if our great nation has a whole bunch of deplorables as defined as racist chanters.

If you ask me, just deplorable political backtracking. Deplorable presidential acting. It is very telling how when the handlers convince him he F’ed up and then he goes on to re-explain, he really isn’t at all convincing. “I wasn’t basking in the support I felt given to me through the chant, I silenced them by starting to talk right back up. Oh, did I say I don’t support the chant? Because I don’t! I do support the chanters!”

It doesn’t really even matter where it comes from. They don’t buy everything he says, but — he seems to hold out some hope that their lives will be different. They won’t wake up and see their jobs disappear, lose a kid to heroin, feel like they’re in a dead-end. Those are people we have to understand and empathize with as well.

Another later version an LGBT fundraiser there were 2 baskets" one deplorable… they’re racist, sexist, homophobic, xenophobic -islamaphobic you name it"… “and there is another basket” and here is where she tried to clean up and get to the forgotten others and yeah maybe some jobs really weren’t coming back honestly. She then further backed up with a “my argument is with him not the supporters”

I saw an article this morning that 90% of RacistTrump supporters do not believe he is racist. It also polled those opposed to RacistTrump and found that 90% believe he is a racist.
They didn’t address whether those that were chanting felt it was racist, but I suspect they don’t. The again, I remember my childhood in the 60’s when the Civil Rights Act backlash resulted in George Wallace ran for president on a segregation platform, and blacks were routinely called the N word, and the often used refrain of “if they don’t like it they can go back to Africa”. None of them then would have said they were racist either.

In a perverse way it would be refreshing if the hoods were simply taken off those who chanted. George Wallace and his segregation platform came as close to defining the group of Deplorables as we have gotten. No wait, I seem to remember, they weren’t racist but just state rights segregationists who did not like the feds coming down and fixing their separation of the races ways.

if you look at the actions and words of southern politicians immediately following brown v board, and up thru 1965, it’s clear that the majority of southern voters still had their asses quite chapped over how the civil war ended. there was still a lot of virulent racism. and they were democrats.
then JFK, and bobby kennedy as his AG, followed by LBG and his great society and civil rights legislation, showed the “dixiecrats” that the party was no longer a reliable ally. between 1968 and 1980 the south moved to the republican party. only jimmy carter - fellow southerner - abated that trend a little in 1976.
the republicans noticed the racists were up for grabs and starting with goldwater’s campaign actively appealed to abandoned segregationists (racists). there is a revisionist counter-theory that there was no southern strategy. but the republican national committee formally apologized to the NAACP in the early 2000s for the southern strategy in order to try to win the black vote back.
you have this mythology - alive even on this forum, pushed by smart people - that there was no southern strategy and that the civil war was fought to protect states rights (not slavery). republicans are outraged, highly offended, when you mention that their victories depend on the racist vote. sometimes here on the forum it’s brought up - as an equivalence - that democrats are virulent racists too, just look at (some pre-1960 event).
i’ve got problems with the virtue signaling, hyper-woke wing of the democratic party. but i think most of this is a misguided search for justice by otherwise well intentioned people. but you look at the contents of a trump rally, you see racism in full bloom. inside of hillary’s basket sit the parts of the republican voting bloc that are deplorable: racists, and those who think there’s only 1 amendment that matters. democrats threw the racists out. republicans were happy to pick them up. we see that in full bloom today. republicans of good conscience must wrestle with that.

Didn’t one your last guarantees come back a loser? Death and taxes are the only safe guaranteed bets. As a Canadian sitting out in the peanut gallery of the left field bleacher seats across the lakes, you are afforded the luxury of “looking forward”. As patriotic american, I can not and do not look forward to your version of the future. The true deplorable racist, who is also just as patriotic, might welcome that future though.
Many analysts have said the death blow to the McCain campaign was when he called out the old lady at the town hall meeting who called President Obama a Muslim. As I am sure you recall, his response was dispelling that myth, then saying President Obama is “a very good man.”
It seems the masses want an us vs. them mentality and a full fledged fight. However, it also seems “hope and change” brings out more liberal-learning folks while insulting character brings out more conservative-leaning folks. So, I do not think a full on attack like that from the Dem candidate would work out well for the Dems.

The problem was not that Secretary Clinton called some of Trump’s supports deplorable. The problem is that the majority of his supporters did not read past the headline or what President Trump “told” them she said.
After she categorized half of his supporters as deplorable, she want on to say that the other half were hard working people whom the government has let down.
I’ll give you that maybe she should not have quantified the numbers, but let’s call a spade a spade. A good chunk of the President’s supporters are certainly deplorable; the fact that some of his supporters are in fact deplorable is not really debatable.
What I find interesting is that so many of his supporters decided to wrap themselves in the blanket of being deplorable instead of saying, “I am part of the other half.”
