So I don’t know when to really start to worry. I flew with my bike as a checked bag. It did not arrive when I did. My initial thought was no biggie the race is not until Saturday. This was Monday night. Tuesday night, Sabrina from Delta here in Kona called asking if I called in or knew anything. She said she saw when she tracks it getting to LAX. She no longer sees the bike at LAX and it did not arrive today.
Anyone with any ideas on how to get a bike? I will definitely check the expo today. But anyone familiar with shops that might rent here? Any advice tips?
I don’t want to be the boy who cried wolf yet, but I think some preplanning is in order.
I know that their Marketing/Sales guy (Mac) has already chimed in on some other threads of people without bikes, but catch up with the guys from Quintana Roo at the expo. They have the rental fleet of Tri bikes there if I am not mistaken. I’m sure they’ll be able to hook you up if Delta drops the ball more.
The lack of info form Delta would be concerning for me. If I were in your shoes, I would definitely take some preemptive action and line up another bike.
Still plenty of time for it to show up, but peace if mind is worth it. No need to burn nervous energy when you don’t have to, IMO.
Its always bets to have a back up. I was in your same situation with Delta this year for the Vineman 70.3. I flew in from JFK to SFO Thursday and my bike didn’t make it. The race was on Sunday and they got it to me Saturday evening. They had a courier bring it from the airport to my hotel which was about an hour away. The good thing was Vineman didn’t require day before bike check in. I think you should be ok though as you still have a few more days.
Funny thing, as I read their issues. I was hoping to at least know where my bike was. I didn’t ship TBT because it was a 3 week lead time (east coast) and I didn’t want to not ride for 3 weeks before hand.
I guess one man’s trash is still another man’s treasure.

I read somewhere that TBT sucks so you dodged a bullet there…
If QR doesn’t work out, check with Bikeworks and Cycle Station, too. I know Bikeworks rents bikes (including Specialized), but they are usually sold out for Kona. Still, they might be able to help you out. If Specialized has a booth in town, check with them, too. They usually have demo bikes. If nothing else, checking with these places will get the coconut wireless working. Please keep us updated.
Sorry to hear about your situation. Everyone who posted bashing TBT earlier in the week for being a day late/expensive should read this post.
Alternatively, you should look at the timeframes and frustrations that were present when that post was originally made. TBT was late delviering bikes, was providing nebulouos information re: when the bikes would be there and, perhaps most critically, weren’t answering the hot line they established to provide information to consumers. It wasn’t until much later that TBT said that they had resolved reportedly the issue within 26 hours.
Their mistakes also affected dozens (hundreds? dunno) of consumers. Delta’s screw-up affected one.
On the whole, airlines are pretty damn good at delivering their luggage (and I have had more than my fair shore of screw-ups as I travel frequently). I’ll take my chances with them any day and keep my bike with me as long as possible vs. using a service like TBT.
Update-QR is willing to set me up with a sweet ride if mine doesn’t come in. Wasn’t even a question to them. They stepped up and said come see us if it doesn’t come in. Huge load off the shoulders.
Sorry to read about this Steve. Do you know your pad stack/reach? I may be able to figure it out from a pic I have on phone. The QRs are a bit diff than your Shiv. Good for QR!
I remember a story where Scott Bowe (sentania) had his Speed Concept run over at IMAZ several yrs ago, borrowed/rented a QR CD01 from IOS at expo and promptly went 9:00:01.
Hey James, Ya, I actually have my fit coordinates as a document on my computer. I took a pic of it and now have it on my phone. Ya, I feel a shitake ton better with this in the back pocket if needed.
My bike to arrive from Delta. It was late so I waited until the morning to put it together. When I did my RD was bent and I had to go buy a new one. I’ve made the claim with delta to see about reimbursement. My stress level was a little higher than anticipated the these first few days. But it’s working itself out now. It’s not ideal but workable.
