I guess it never hurts to have D-1 / olympic trials swimming lineage in the family. As Steve Forbes once said in a commencement speech, paraphrasing: “Graduates, The best advice I can give you it to choose your parents wisely… look how it’s helped me in life.” Not to suggest that Andrew hasn’t trained extremely hard to get where he is, of course.
Wonder if his coach-dad works with mere mortal, MOP triathlete swimmers? Anyone here on ST trained out of Delaware Swim Team?
I really like this quote:
“We don’t really train in open water," said Gemmell, who did not swim at Charter. "We train in the pool. We’ve found that pool swimming is actually very similar to open water swimming.”
Take note, triathletes.

Yes, sure. Until you have to say hello to Mr. Big Wave for the first time.
We live in a city with big surf at times and it is clear our kids always had an advantage in rough seas with big waves, particularly when you start from the beach.

i think he means you can get a much better quality/controlled swim in the pool. its pretty hard to make things constant in open water.
