I was watching Hannity last night because I needed to put myself through pain and he was getting all worked up about Obama saying we are not a Christian nation. Two questions…
What is your definition of Christian Nation?
Why do you lefties ride Limbaugh’s ass but ignore Hannity, the biggest idiot on TV?
We are a secular nation that affords every citizen the opportunity to practice the religion of their choice, or abstain from religious practice as they see fit. Most here practice Christianity, which makes them Christians living among the Christian majority in a secular nation.
The term is nothing more than one among many weapons in the conservative arsenal. It has no intrinsic value outside the culture war.
Forgot to add: Hannity is a unique individual. I admire his (and Beck’s) genuine love for his country, and his passionate defense of his ideals. His blind patriotism, dishonesty, and like so many pundits on the far Right, his idiotic blanket implications that those on the Left (meaning, anyone left of Hannity) are geniunely anti-American, are what will earn him his place in the dustbin of media history. He doesn’t do stupid nearly as effectively or as entertainingly as Boss Limbaugh.
I love it when he welcomes a caller on his radio program with “You’re a Great American. Go ahead…” then later calls them kook-aid drinkers when they turn out to be unfriendlies. Classic Hannity.
well at around 70 to 75%, Christians do have a controlling interest in the corporation that is America.
If the dow tanks again I’m going to let them have it.

Hannity is great theater but that is about it. He also gets the lefties all worked up which is fun to watch.
We are NOT a Christian nation.
It is funny, I sat in church on Palm Sunday at a Catholic Mass. It was one of the most beautiful services I have been to in a long, long time. (I am Episcopalian). It made me feel very good to see 200 or 300 people, young, old, teenagers, families, senior citizens, all colors and walks of life.
It also reminded me that by the very fact that I was thinking how wonderful it was to see this many people at church, was indicitive of how few people I know go to church anymore.
Any idea that we are a Christian nation is ludicrous. Obama was merely speaking fact.
The only true Christian sovereign area in the world is Vatican City.
“The Pope is ex officio head of state and head of government of Vatican City, functions dependent on his primordial function as the bishop of the Archdiocese of Rome. His official title with regard to Vatican City is Sovereign of the State of the Vatican City.
The Pope is also a monarch, meaning he has total legislative, executive and judicial power over Vatican City.”

I’m really glad you are venturing over to the Tibbs’ Purple Palace more often. You are a huge asset to the board.

no jack, shorts are not allowed in the big house. However, I did wear compression socks the last time I was in the Vatican for mass a few years back. I was not able to get the Pope to bless my sore calf muscles tough.
Is “defention” some kind of portmanteau word–perhaps a cross between “defense” and “detention”? If so, it might make some kind of sense in a theocracy, since theocrats tend to be very defensive and since living under their yoke might feel like detention.
In any case, I agree with what sphere said above. I think, though, that Hannity was talking more about the country’s origins–that is, the views of the founders. In that regard, I think Hannity is very mistaken. Although it is possible to find quotations from the founders that appear very pious, there are many other things they said that indicate that their world-view was very secular, primarily influenced by liberal Enlightenment thought from European thinkers who were mostly anticlerical and often tended toward atheism.
Even the argument to the Founders’ religious belief, or citations of their mention of God, that so many tend to make is a red herring; the wisdom of the secular structure they built is that it ensured the free practice of their religion for all future generations - something a theocracy (e.g. a “Christian Nation”) could never do. If 100% of the Founders were born-again fundamentalist Christians, the argument would remain meritless.
Try to follow along her, Tex. We’re not talking about the religious beliefs of the Founders, or the expression of their beliefs; we’re talking about whether the United States of America is a theocratic or secular democratic republic.

geesh Sphere, considering I have little idea what the difference is between a theocratic or secular democratic republic, I’ll just cast my vote with “i love jesus, and i wish more of you would as well…”

Always attack the biggest threat to you. As you point out Hannity is a “Big idiot” that does little more than pull the “Well sir would you kill a single baby or blow up an entire building full of babies”…“Well if given the choice I woul have to kill the single baby”. “See sir I knew you were a baby killer”. Yes he’s an idiot.
Rush OTOH is first and foremost pretty darn entertaining at times. Second despite his air of arrogance, being extremely right leaning and out and out wrong and misleading on many issues, IMO, occasionally he hits the nail on the head and drives it home. That of course scares the bejezus out of the left as there is no real retort to being wrong, especially when the person who is right has a multi million person viewership, 3 hours a day to prove his point and enough money to protect himself.
Well I’m a godless heathen who lives in happy valley and I’d still like to think its not a Christian nation. I only ski, golf or go out to breakfast on Sundays because most of Utah has some weird superstitions and they can’t go out on sundays.
I would call Vatican City a religious sovereign, not a Christian sovereign. The Roman Catholic Church does not represent the entire Christian Church.
I think a truly Christian nation is one in which all people lived according to the orthodox teachings of Christianity, and government is established to allow all persons to live accordingly. However, since Christianity is a set of facts that not all people believe (even those that attend Christian churches), I don’t think that my idea of a Christian nation is possible this side of Heaven.
I don’t believe the Founding Fathers ever intended to establish a Christian nation - what they established was a secular republic that allows freedom of religion to follow whatever set of teaching you prefer. As James Madison said when he argued against tax exemptions for churches, he did not government to define what is and what is not a church. I prefer the separation of church and state.
