Decrease your carbon footprint: Drive, don't run/walk/bike

Given there are many critical minds here, I’d like you to take a look at this article which claims driving as opposed to walking 3 miles is better for the environment. Why? Because when you refuel with beef (because that’s all I eat after any exercise), and you factor in the energy to grow that beef, it’s more than a car would’ve contributed.

Your training is ruining the earth.

Some of the more tenuous correlations masquerading as causation:

  • “The troubling fact is that taking a lot of exercise and then eating a bit more food is not good for the global atmosphere. Eating less and driving to save energy would be better.”

  • “Driving a typical UK car for 3 miles adds about 0.9 kg of CO2 to the atmosphere,” he said, a calculation based on the Government’s official fuel emission figures. “If you walked instead, it would use about 180 calories. You’d need about 100g of beef to replace those calories, resulting in 3.6kg of emissions, or four times as much as driving.* Organic beef is the most damaging because organic cattle emit more methane.

  • The ideal diet would consist of cereals and pulses. “This is a route which virtually nobody, apart from a vegan, is going to follow,”

  • Someone who installs a “green” lightbulb undoes a year’s worth of energy-saving by buying two bags of imported veg, as so much carbon is wasted flying the food to Britain

  • Trees, regarded as shields against global warming because they absorb carbon, were found by German scientists to be major producers of methane, a much more harmful greenhouse gas

johnnygofaster,

First off, this belongs in the Lavender Room.

Secondly, the article conveniently omits all the energy consumed extracting the petroleum from the earth, the energy consumed to transport it to the refinery, the energy consumed refining the crude oil, and the energy consumed transporting the gasoline to the filling station and lastly, the energy the filling station consumes to deliver the gasoline to the car!. Now let’s go back and “re-figure” this pronouncement.

Thirdly, I look at all the “preachers” on this subject and then look at the examples they are setting by their own lifestyles and I have to say they certainly live lives of double standard. One would have to say they are telling us to do as they say, not as they do.

Just a little hipocritical isn’t it?

Why isn’t what’s good for the goose also good for the gander?

Why cant people just get over it! I still want to find the bastard that caused the ice age to end!

Reduce your carbon footprint: Buy aluminum and titanium bikes!

And Beef magically winds up on your plate at home?

Do people that drive cars not eat beef?

During my ride today I started to bonk badly, good thing I had a gel in my back pocket… Flavor? Well, it was medium-rare sirloin steak, of course!!!

Do people that drive cars not eat beef?

Do you have a point?

Grant

I can guarandamntee that I eat a lot less beef, and calories for that matter, than most “drivers”. My greatest contribution to air pollution is the gas that flies from my arse due to my healthy diet. 3 miles run for me likely requires zero extra calories, 3 miles walking definitely no extra calories required. 10 miles or more on the other hand would require a bit more and you can argue that I never really run instead of drive. I just run.

This is stupid.

i can’t believe this ridiculous thread is still here.

I didn’t bother to read this article, but if you didn’t exercise and died 10 years from heart disease or type 2 diabetes or boredom, now that would save a lot of carbon!

I remember back in the bad old days, when people were still trying to deny global warming etc, that Ronald (McDonald) Regan, actually claimed that TREES, caused acid rain!

As with all claims about anything, the first question that should be asked is…

“What has this person (the information provider) got to gain from giving me this information?”

One has to thoroughly einvestigate the “whole” picture. Recently there has beel all sorts of crap about “carbon footprints”

A particular argument may or may not actually result in a smaller carbon footprint, but carbon footprint isn’t all we have to think about when making choices in life.

For example. If you have 2 kids, you arguably sustain the human population. If you have 3 kids, that’s 50% population growth! and your cabon footprint, for now and (arguably) eternity, goes up by 50%. Not acceptable.

Is driving to the local supermarket for food any better or worse than driving further to get organic produce? IF you ride your bike to the supermarket, you will need to buy more food anyway. Is that better or worse. How many calories do each of us consume each day, compared with if we didn’t work out so much. How much does that damage the environent. How many flat tires have you had in your car this year? How about how many flat tires on your bike? do you patch them or throw them out? I won’t even get into how wasteful tubbies are (and no, not tele-tubbies). And so on…

Thin I might just drive to the bar and get drunk after work, this is all too much

I reckon that if powerbars came in roast beef flavour, and gatorade came in gravy flavour, I could win KONA!!!

See, this is the kind of thinking that is destroying this planet

What are humans made of? Carbon! Therefore, if you die, you are actually putting a lot more carbon back into the planet (when you put your body into the ground, and don’t even get me started on cremation!!!) LOL

We still are. And we are winning.

Feel free to remain ignorant. Please empty your bank account and send you money to me in exchange for pollution credits. I’ll also name a star after you.

Global warming is a FACT. The planet IS warming up, with some pretty significant impacts already underway for us all.

However, the CAUSE (and effects) of the global warming is the real debate. Is mans current activity responsibly for this current warming trend or is it a part of the normal pulsing of temperatures.

For example, many years ago, I read book called “From Vinland to Mars”. The book examined exploration over the last 1000 years or so.

Starting back in 850AD, the Vikings started to head west, looking for new lands. The cause of this was that the population in Scandanavia had exploded. Why? Summers had gotten warmer and winters had gotten shorter. The net result was that food was plentiful and the death rate plummeted and population exploded. This put alot of stress on society and (believe it or not) all the land was already accounted for. Rather than just one son taking over from his father, 2-3 brothers would survive to breeding age. Each one needed land, but it was all already spoken for. The only choice was to search for more land. So, they headed west looking for it. With warmer summers, they were able to get to Iceland and establish colonies there. That quickly got gobbled up too and on to Greenland it was. Next was Newfoundland, Labrador, and all the way to the Carolinas.

All this was possible because of the “Little Climactic Optimum” a period of warmer weather that lasted from about 850AD, to 1300AD or so. By 1300, the winters got longer again, with cooler and shorter summers, resulting in reduced harvests. This lead to a lot of starvation and reduced populations in the new lands. The route ‘home’ from the America’s was cutoff by cold winters (lack of food and so on) in Greenland and Iceland, so the populations died out.

Current Newfoundland was called “Vinland” by the Vikings (the son of Eric the Red was the first to Newfoundland in about 886AD, if I remember correctly) because it was so lush and bountiful that it supported fruiting vines of all kinds).

Is our current global warming a natural phenomenon like it was last millenium, or is it an abnormal phenomenon created by us? Is it a combination of both? The real problem is that we don’t know how bad it’s going to get and what impacts it will have on us humans and the rest of the planets inhabitants. Exploration continues to this day, with man still looking for new land as a short term solution for our expanding population. Just this morning, the latest Mars explorer headed off to find out more about our nearest (possibly) inhabitable neighbouring plantet, presumably as a precurser to us moving there.

When will we learn to control our population, and start to improve the quality of our lives, rather than simply craving MORE, regardless of the cost to humanity and the planet? I am glad that I will not be around long enough to have to deal with all the ramifications of my own, and my kids generations. Maybe the next species to take over this planet will be a little smarter.

I just hope polar bears survive until it gets cold again. They are really cool, majestic animals and don’t deserve to die out because of our greed and desire to drive SUV’s.

That is priceless… lol

All that typing and THAT is what you took from it? Far out. (pretty funny pic tho’, I love it)
