Decision Made on World Qualifiers for Oly Distance

USA Triathlon has recieved permission from the ITU to allow athletes who picked up their packets in Kansas City to race in Hawaii in the Worlds.

“80% of success is just showing up.” Woody Allen

I guess he was right. Good luck everyone. See you in Honolulu.

Guess they’ll be a lot of Team USA triathlon uniforms sold. Maybe I’ll check out e-bay in a few months to see what’s there.

Hmmm, wow and I’m a little shocked and maybe disappointed in USAT. Why not just go back to the first qualifier and ask the finishers in the top 15 if they want to go instead of having 30+ athletes show up and race at worlds. Just showing up AND picking up your packet is too random and IMO too lax of a selection criteria. Bad weather happened, I’ve been at cancelled races, it sucks. But I think giving 40+ people per age group the ok to race worlds dilutes what worlds is about. Testing yourself against the best. Yes, some of the top US guys will go but so will cannon fodder who would never qualify. On the othe hand it is a once in a lifetime opportunity for many to race worlds, meet people from other countries, race an international race etc. Good luck to all going. (Flame on I’m wearing nomex boxers).

You might be talking about me, I don’t know. No offense taken though. I’m debating all the same stuff. I don’t know where I would have finished @ nationals. I doubt top 10 but I thought top 18 was possible and was hoping for a roll down spot. Now, given the opportunity to do world’s in the US it seems crazy to pass up. And yet it’s expensive and unearned so…Any advice appreciated I guess.

I say go for it. Participating in the W. championship is something special. The slowest 1/3 of any team probably shows up feeling unworthy, but once you’ve done the race, the doubts are forgotten. Even in a normal year, we’re not all going for a medal. The experience itself is golden, and you can keep that with you the rest of your life.

wow how USELESS.

I’m leaning towards your sentiment. I knew someone would remember the “you can buy your way into nationals” sentiment but it doesn’t make sense to pass on an opportunity cuz some stranger might think you’re not worthy.

Thanks to all opinions.

So are the ITU also going to grant other countries the same privilege of more than 18 per AG?

From ITU 2005 Competition Rules: B.4.4 Age -Groups: a) Age for each of the age group categories 18-19 yrs, and 5 year categories from 20 years to 80+ will be determined as of 31 December in the year of the competition. **b) A maximum of 18 athletes can be entered in each category by their National Federation.

I’m with you. Do it and you’ll never wonder if you should have. Who cares if someone says you don’t belong because this year you do. You paid to race in the nationals and didn’t get the chance. Get ready for a non-wetsuit swim.

I’m not being critical of anyone that tries to go. It just seems that there had to be a better process, even if it meant going back to the first qualifer and asking the say top 20 only if they want to go. I just find it hard to justify allowing that many to race when other nations get 18 only. Even then I think 18 per AG is maybe 3-6 too many. Oh well best wishes for a great race to those that go. I’ve done Tri and Du worlds and both were good experiences.

Man your really anti short course nationals and worlds lately. Yeah you can buy your way into USAT’s nationals and not race your way into worlds this year, but come on, if someone pees in your cheerios just don’t eat them please.

<<. So are the ITU also going to grant other countries the same privilege of more than 18 per AG?

it may not actually be written into the rules, but the standard is that the host country can have as many entries as they want per age group. That was my understanding and the leg that USAT stood on in requesting what they did from the ITU.

Mike,

I did not know that re host country. It may be interesting then at AG Long Course Worlds next year in Australia - could see a lot of Aussies racing.

Not saying it’s not messed up, but your like my mom harping and harping and harping. Relax let it go. Here is a good link to some relaxing music, as least soothing for me anyway.
