Here is the scoop. I am buying a new house. I want a pool but I do not know what I should do. If I get a lap pool, the max length is 45 feet long. I also have the maintenance, cleaning etc. to go along with it. But, it is only 15 yards long. Will I feel like a fish in a fish bowl in that pool? Endless Pool obvious I can swim as much as I want with no flip turns. Price for the lap pool is around $25,000. Won’t use it for lap swimming in the winter probably but would like to throw my legs in it after a long ride/run. What do you guys think? I know absolutely nothing about Endless Pools so any info on that will help as well.
If it were me I would go with the endless for sure! Plus if you move you can take it with you… For more info go to their website and have them send you the free dvd… It is very informative…
I don’t have a pool, but friends tell me that in the summer (in Phoenix) they turn into jacuzzi temperature water, not so good for lap swimming. I’d opt to buy a house near a nice indoor pool, you’ll get a better pool and much less costs. Swimming in a lane is boring enough, I can’t imagine an endless pool being very motivating. If I had to pick, I’d take the outdoor pool since it has other uses than working out, but I would count on doing any serious workouts somewhere else, esp. in the summer.
I live in Phoenix and I built a 15 yard pool that I use for my swim training from April to Nov. If I had a solar heater I would use it year round. I love swimming in my own pool, especially in the summer. It gets warm but never over 90 and usually around 82-84 in summer mornings. Right now it is about 82 in the morning. Questions you should ask:
Do you have young kids who want to play in the pool? If yes, a real pool has to be your choice.
Do you travel a lot? I do and it is alway a pain getting someone to look after the pool for periods of 3-4 weeks.
Will you be moving soon? If yes, go with the Endless Pool.
Do you live in a warm place where you will use the pool for fund, pool parties, etc? If yes, go with the lap pool and make it a combo lap pool and play pool. That is what we have. Pool companies charge by the perimeter so adding surface volume adds little in cost (but some in maintenance).
Also, if you go with the lap pool you should be able to get the cost substantially below $25,000 if you do the contracting. That is what we did. We designed the pool and then hired all the subs. We saved a lot of money that way.
Neither! More motivating to go to a Y or some other faciltiy to swim. I can’t imagine training in an endless pool. I did one swim in the local YMCA pool which is only 15 yards long and that was it. I now drive 30 minutes to and from the closest Olympic size pool and it is much better despite the drive than the 15 yard pool. I guess if you wanted to you could do all of your training at home. Swim in your endless pool, ride on a trainer (i.e. CompuTrainer), and run on a treadmill but I guarantee you that would get old quickly. Just my 2 cents.
If I remember right, I recently saw an add for a new Endless Pool unit that attaches to the side of a regular swimming pool thus turning it into an Endless Pool for lap swimming. You can have the best of both worlds. I think there was a thread about it a few days ago.
I swam in an endless pool for the first time. Loved it! As close to open water as you can get. Mirror on the bottom allowed me to self correct my form. If there was a 15 yard pool and an endless pool side by side, I would get in the endless every time. Costs less, takes up less space and you can take it with you if you move.
