i understand a physical and mental challenge … but where does it end?
I would rather cut out my liver with a blunt butter knife. it would be less painful, involve less bleeding and ultimately lead to less damage to my internal organs.
A friend of mine did this event a few years ago. At that time he held the record for most Ironman events in one year. He was in the Guinnes Book. His name is Chet (the Jet) Blanton. With that, yes I agree where does it end???
Jesus H Christ, you have got to be kidding me. I was just telling some people that I get a headache when I swim more than 1000 meters in a pool w/o stopping. 12 - 22 hours of swimming? I’d be in a coma.
And all of those laps running?? Sleep deprivation?? No thanks.
I’d rather do the Hands on a Hardbody. At least the winner gets a truck out of the deal.
What amazes me most, is that people have enough free time to do something like this. Even more amazing is that they can find others willing to spend two weeks supporting them in such a bizarre effort
Actually most of these people are just regular folks with regular lives. My friend Corrado will probably try to do it next year and he’s definitely not a freak. The guy works in the morning as a bank clerk, then 3 afternoons a week he runs his own tri store, he’s 38, is not married but has a girlfriedn who’s totally into these things too.
How does he go about preparing something ridiculous as a deca IM? (yeah I admit that for me it’s crazy)
He started doing ironmans a few years ago, then ultramarathons, then he did a few marathon des Sables, then he organized the Boa Morte, then he moved to double IM. Last October he finished third at lake Anna (Va) Triple IM, next year, if he finds a few sponsors, he will attempt to do the Deca.
Crazy? Maybe. A freak? No way!
If you think that’s impressive (as I do) check out this site http://www.triathlonweb.nl/dutch/records.htm and scroll to the bottom of the page, yes that right the double-decker, cruised in a swift 18 days 5 hours 21 minutes and forty seconds. I entered the race but DNS as my sponsor pulled out. I would love to have another crack at it but I must admit a point to point race would be far more appealing!
