I’m a fan of Steve Bullock. How’d he do?
I missed it but one analyst seems to think he did very well. Sounds like my kind of Democrat. Too bad he’ll be gone in a month. From CNN:
Steve Bullock: The Montana governor, to his immense credit, understood that this debate was his one big chance to make an impression with voters – and move from the third tier upward. I’m not sure if his numbers will move in a major way, but Bullock went for it – from his opening statement on. He made clear, time and time again, that he did not believe that the liberal views of Warren and Sanders were grounded in reality and did believe that those views would cost Democrats the election. He blasted “wish-list economics” and talked about the need to solve the “here and now” problems rather than offering what he views as unworkable pie-in-the-sky policies. If moderates were looking for someone other than former Vice President Joe Biden to support in this primary, Bullock offered himself as a viable alternative.
I pretty much hated the last election cycle and felt like it was all dirty and rigged. But I think I’m ready to be optimistic.
I looked around a wee, tiny bit and found the following:
I think my plan will be to back someone like Bullock, even if it means I’m backing a loser.

Bullock and Hickenlooper sounded like rational human beings when they spoke about health care and immigration . Sas you can imagine , there pretty much toast.
Bullock was a two term democratic governor in a state that has voted for a republican presidential candidate in 12 of the last 13 elections. He’s a level headed candidate that understands how to reach across the aisle and get things done. Unfortunately for him Montana is one of the least populated states so he likely doesn’t have enough name recognition to break into the stronghold of the usual suspects.
Glad he called out Warren and Sanders for what their views are and how it could going with either of those two would mean a loss in 2020 for the dems.
Oh, and he’s run something like 14 marathons (I know, take that shit to the tri room…)

Maybe in this new era of news and communication, Bullock can make his name known. Why not? Any damn fool can.
I was asking my parents (democrats in Montana) how they feel about Bullock, and they are positive but don’t have hope. Does anyone feel hopeful? Based upon responses here, it seems like I’m the only dreamer.

I thought Bullock got off to a slow start but found his grove midway. He seemed like an adult up there, along with Delaney, Ryan, and Hickenlooper. Hickenlooper, however, seemed to struggle to get his points out concisely.
Klobuchar seemed a middle ground between Sanders/Warren and the others.
Williamson is bat-shit crazy.
O’Rourke is a walking cliché and in way over his head.
Buttigieg is extremely well-spoken. I’m generally not a fan of his policies, but I think he can debate toe-to-toe with anyone.
Sanders/Warren think everything in the world is free. Warren thinks she can win by just saying she’s ready to “fight”. Sanders turns every question he doesn’t like into a lecture on healthcare.
Kudos to Jake Tapper on asking good questions with tough follow-up, and kudos to all moderators for doing a great job holding the candidates to their time. That said, when Sanders was questioned about holding the same position as Trump that the US can’t be the “policeman of the world”, Sanders responded that Trump is “a pathological liar”. He then went on a wandering journey nowhere close to an answer, but ended with “we should not be the world’s policeman”. There was no follow-up.
Don Lemon is a partisan douche. He was the only moderator who asked questions like, “Health care is an important issue in this election and many people struggle to afford coverage. Why is Donald Trump a racist bigot?”

Did not watch, but tuned in after to the other left network, MSNBC, to become enlightened. Their analyst panel made a very pointed effort to highlight the moderate, pragmatic pushback that Ryan, Hickenlooper, Bullock, Donnelly, provided to the pie in the sky- freebie-revolution ideas of bernie and beth. My take was that this network, on this night, had decidedly tried to level the field and move into the realistically what will it take to win realm contrasted with a geeeesh, if bernie or beth are the nominee then it really is going to be a crapshoot election. Rep. ryan’s Youngstown union blue collar white male electorate was given a large shout out as no shit important.
Tonight should be dominated with matters of race. If your Bullock or the other1% polling moderates have any hope going forward, it is that Biden fails miserably tonight and then steps aside clearing the road for them to step up. Bullock is the next president if and only if, Biden pulls out of the race for health reasons or in admission that his era has passed and takes bernie with him in the my time is past excuse group, and then endorses Bullock to carry on.

I’d agree with this. Both were governors and having that executive branch experience and working with both parties in the legislative branch is a bonus in my book.
Bullock wasn’t at the first debate, but did well in this one. Hickenlooper just hasn’t performed well in either one of the debates. Likely, both of their time as a candidate for the party’s nomination is limited.
A moderate would have greater appeal to those conservatives who won’t vote for Trump than a candidate who seems to be one of the Dems racing to the left.

Not sure there is anyway for a guy like Bullock, Delaney, Ryan to come out of this. In the twitter world, cult of personality society we live in, craziness and over the top ideas sell to the masses. Those guys are the voice of reason in a pool of nut jobs like Sanders, Warren, Booker etc.
Biden should be the nominee but if we see him get pushed out by the ultra left wing of the dems and they put up someone like Warren or Sanders we will know what we need to know about the Dem party moving forward.

Maybe it’s a show to mock the Republicans? Dems are gonna go out and say look we can pull 20 candidates in the primaries too but unlike the republicans we can produce a reasonable candidate.

That is really counter thinking. Primaries are very different than general elections, pretty much different beasts.
With that line of thinking, if the primary on the dem side is left leaning, why wouldnt there be a more centrist primary candidate on the right just to win?
effectively 1) you have to win the primary. if you are a -.1 on the -10 to +10 scale you just arnt going to win the primary. This was very similar to the old gov. of new york not winning the GOP primary in 2016 (effectively the equivalent of bullock). How many people on the right here are championing Bill Weld? Really no one.
- if the other part is throwing out someone between a 8-10 range, that is very far from center. You can throw someone out there who is in the 5-7 range, and still pick up the centrists. Sanders positions are pretty much close to a 0 (equivilant of a ted cruz) where warren is like a .15 equivalent to a Rubio. Biden is close to center and would be close to a McCain.

^^And this is also the reason why many Trump voters don’t consider themselves racist like they’re painted, don’t apologize for Trump, and they don’t consider themselves Trump supporters.
If the choice is Trump or somebody who is going to forgive student loan debt, pay trillions in reparations, and kill employer-sponsored health care, there really isn’t a choice. These Trump voters will gladly live in hiding and deal with MSNBC and CNN calling them racist, etc. in order to avoid the crazy that Sanders/Warren bring to the table.
We need moderation from both sides.
